Old Town (Sant Francesc)

Sant Francesc Hotel Singular

Palma’s most polished old-town hotel: a five-star mansion of 1860 on a quiet square, with 42 rooms and suites, a rooftop pool bar over the rooftops and the Quadrat restaurant in the old stables.

★★★★★

Sant Francesc Hotel Singular is the splurge choice in the heart of the old town. It occupies a neoclassical mansion built in 1860 on the Plaça de Sant Francesc, facing the great Gothic basilica of Sant Francesc, in the quiet eastern half of the historic centre. The restoration keeps high ceilings, painted beams and tiled floors, and the 42 rooms include 32 rooms and 10 suites, some with terraces and one in the old tower. Up on the roof there is a small pool and a terrace bar with views across the bell towers to the cathedral and the bay, a rare thing in the old town. Downstairs, Quadrat, the restaurant in the former stables and garden, serves modern Mediterranean cooking, and there is a lobby bar, a small gym and massages through the hotel’s wellbeing service. It is listed in the Michelin Guide.

Location and getting around: the Plaça de Sant Francesc is in the quieter, more residential part of the old town, about a ten-minute walk from the cathedral through lanes lined with mansions and courtyards. The Arab baths, the Plaça Major and the shops of Sant Miquel are all within an easy stroll, and you will not need a car in the city. Valet parking is offered for a daily fee, and the hotel can arrange an airport transfer.

The rooms: the entry rooms are elegant but compact, so if you like space choose a deluxe room or one of the suites, some of which have private terraces. Expect a calm palette, good beds and well-equipped bathrooms. Rooms facing the square are bright; those toward the inner side are the quietest.

Who it suits: couples on a special trip, travellers who want five-star service in a historic setting, and anyone who would rather walk to dinner than take taxis. Families are welcome, but extra beds are not available and the rooftop pool is unfenced, so it suits older children best.

Good to know: breakfast includes a generous buffet and dishes cooked to order. The rooftop pool is small and more for cooling off than for swimming lengths. In the low season, check that the rooftop bar and pool are open on your dates, and ask about winter offers.
