Le Morne Brabant is the mountain that appears on half the postcards of Mauritius: a great block of basalt rising more than 500 metres straight out of the south-west corner of the island, with a turquoise lagoon and the famous underwater-waterfall illusion of sand and current spread out beneath it. It is also a place of deep meaning. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, escaped slaves, known as maroons, hid in its caves and on its summit, and the mountain became a symbol of resistance and freedom; it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The lower trail can be walked alone, but the upper section is steep, rocky and sometimes closed, so most visitors go with a guide. This page links to Hiking Le Morne Brabant with Yanature, the island’s most reviewed hiking tour, rated 5.0 from more than 1,100 reviews. Groups of up to twelve meet at the foot of the mountain in the early morning, climb through forest and open rock to the viewpoints, and, when conditions allow, scramble the final rocky stretch to the top. The guides explain the maroon history, point out native plants and know the safest line on the exposed parts. It is a genuine workout, but the reward is the best panorama on the island.
How it works: the hike takes about three to three and a half hours. You meet the guide at a café in the Harmonie shopping centre at Le Morne and follow by taxi or rental car to the trailhead about six kilometres away, so hotel transfers are not included. Start times are chosen at booking, and many groups set off soon after dawn to beat the heat. Groups are capped at twelve, and free cancellation is possible until 24 hours before.
What you see: the path climbs through dry forest to a first viewpoint over the lagoon and the Le Morne peninsula, then steepens into a rocky section where you use your hands. From the top you look over the reef, the kitesurf lagoon, the south coast and the mountains of Black River. The upper section can be closed or cut short in rain or high wind, so treat the summit as a bonus.
Making the most of it: wear trail shoes with good grip, carry at least a litre and a half of water and start early. The tour is not suitable for children under ten, people over 65 or anyone with heart or back problems, and those with a fear of heights may prefer to stop at the first viewpoint. Afterwards, swim at Le Morne public beach.
