Three Days in Myrtle Beach

Three Days in Myrtle Beach

A three-day plan that balances the classic beach strip with the gardens and marsh of the South Strand, sequences the bookable highlights, and adapts for rainy days, young children and the November-to-March off-season.

Three days is the right length for a first look at Myrtle Beach: enough for the boardwalk, a day on the South Strand and an evening show, with time left on the sand. The plan below assumes a central base on Ocean Boulevard; adjust driving times if you stay in North Myrtle Beach or near Pawleys Island.

Before you go: what to book

Lock in your evening show first, especially in November and December, when The Carolina Opry's Christmas Show of the South (November 2 to December 31, 2026) and the Pirates Voyage Christmas show (select dates November 4, 2026, to January 2, 2027) are the hottest tickets in town. If your dates fall between late November and early January, also book Brookgreen's Nights of a Thousand Candles, which runs on 21 evenings and sells out. Buy SkyWheel and Ripley's Aquarium tickets online for flexibility. Everything else can be decided on the day.

Day one: the classic strip

Start early on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk at the 14th Avenue North pier, where the dune section is quiet in the morning, and walk south along the 1.2 miles toward Plyler Park. Spend the late morning on the beach. After lunch, visit Ripley's Aquarium at Broadway at the Beach and walk the shark tunnel slowly; then wander Lake Broadway's shops and choose a restaurant on the water for an early dinner. Return to the oceanfront for a SkyWheel ride at dusk, when you see the coast in daylight and the light show begins as you come down. Finish with a round of mini golf; Mt. Atlanticus' five-story greens or Hawaiian Rumble's erupting volcano are the classic choices.

Day two: the South Strand

Drive south to Brookgreen Gardens for opening at 9:30 a.m. Give it at least three hours: the sculpture garden rooms, the live oak allee, the reflecting pools and the native-animal area. Your ticket is valid for seven days, so you can come back. Cross the highway to Huntington Beach State Park for the afternoon: scan the causeway for alligators and wading birds, walk the self-guided rooms of Atalaya (call ahead, as it can close for events), and stretch your legs on three miles of undeveloped beach. As the light softens, drive ten minutes north to Murrells Inlet and walk the MarshWalk end to end before choosing a deck for sunset and a seafood dinner. If you have time and energy left, Pawleys Island's historic cottages are fifteen minutes further south, best saved for another trip if the day is already full.

Day three: north end and a show

Spend the morning on a quieter beach, either at Myrtle Beach State Park (South Carolina's first state park, with a fishing pier and maritime forest) or in North Myrtle Beach. Head to Barefoot Landing in the afternoon for a waterfront stroll on the Intracoastal Waterway and an early dinner with a water view. In the evening, see your show: The Carolina Opry for a polished variety production with a live orchestra, Pirates Voyage for a dinner show with pirate ships and acrobatics in an indoor lagoon, or the Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing itself, whose Christmas show runs from November 2, 2026, to January 2, 2027.

If you have a fourth day

Use it to slow down rather than add more. Pawleys Island makes a gentle morning: drive or cycle the island, see the old cottages of the historic district, walk an uncrowded beach and pick up a rope hammock on the mainland side of the causeway. Alternatively, return to Brookgreen on your seven-day ticket for a different garden area or a late opening on Wednesday or Saturday, or spend a long morning at Myrtle Beach State Park's fishing pier. Families can give a whole afternoon to the hotel pools or an indoor water park. Golfers will find the Grand Strand, which promotes itself as the Golf Capital of the World, has courses near every base. A second show night is also an option during the holiday season, when The Carolina Opry, Pirates Voyage and the Alabama Theatre all run Christmas productions.

Driving times to plan around

Central Myrtle Beach to Brookgreen Gardens takes around 30 minutes; to Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, 20 to 30 minutes; to Pawleys Island, 35 to 45 minutes. Summer traffic on US-17 and Kings Highway can stretch these considerably, so keep each day focused on one zone.

If it rains

Swap days around rather than lose the beach. The aquarium, WonderWorks and the rest of Broadway at the Beach fill a wet day, the SkyWheel's enclosed gondolas work in drizzle, and an indoor water park hotel such as Dunes Village keeps children happy. Save Brookgreen for a dry day; tickets may not be refunded for bad weather, though your seven-day validity helps.

With young children

Shorten Brookgreen to two hours and focus on the animals and the playful sculptures, add the touch pool at the aquarium, choose Pirates Voyage for the show, and build in pool time at the hotel each afternoon. Mini golf every evening is not too much.

In the off-season

From November to March, swap the long beach sessions for beach walks, check restaurant hours before driving to the MarshWalk on a weeknight, note that Myrtle Beach State Park's trails are closed through January, and lean into the holiday shows and Brookgreen's candlelit nights. The reward is empty sand, easy parking and some of the lowest rates of the year.
