★★★★★

Calistoga Spa Hot Springs is the best-value stay in Napa Valley and the one we recommend to families and anyone who wants the hot springs without resort prices. It sits at 1006 Washington Street in downtown Calistoga, one block from Lincoln Avenue, the town's main street of cafes, restaurants, shops and spas, so you can park the car and walk everywhere. The resort has 57 renovated guest rooms with contemporary decor, and every room has a kitchenette — a genuine money-saver in a valley where eating out adds up quickly — making it practical for families and longer stays. The real draw is the water. Four outdoor geothermal mineral pools are kept at different temperatures, from a refreshing 80 degrees Fahrenheit or so for swimming laps and splashing to a hot 104 degrees for soaking, plus a mineral whirlpool under a covered patio, so children and adults can each find their comfort zone. The spa offers Calistoga's signature volcanic-ash mud baths, and The Works package combines a mud bath, mineral jet tub, steam, blanket wrap and massage for the full ritual. There is also a fitness center with yoga sessions and an outdoor patio. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious — more classic spa motel than luxury resort — and that is the point: you are paying for the pools, the mud and the location, not for marble. The trade-offs are motel-style architecture and pools that get lively on summer weekends. But for a wine-country base where the kids are happy all afternoon and the adults finish the day soaking under the stars, it is excellent value.

Why Calistoga. The town at the north end of Napa Valley has a different personality from the rest of the valley — a little funky, a little old-fashioned, built on hot water rather than wine money — and prices reflect it. Staying here puts you ten minutes from Castello di Amorosa and close to Sterling Vineyards' gondola, the Old Faithful Geyser of California and the back road over the hills to Safari West and Santa Rosa. It is also a sensible base for splitting a trip between Napa and Sonoma.

Making the most of it. Spend your first afternoon in the pools, book a mud bath or The Works for a non-tasting day, and use the kitchenette for breakfasts and picnic lunches assembled from the town's markets and bakeries. Evenings, stroll Lincoln Avenue for dinner and come back for a late soak. Ask the front desk about day-use options for friends staying elsewhere, and book spa treatments ahead on weekends.

Who should stay. Families, budget-conscious couples, groups of friends and anyone who prioritizes wellness over luxury. If you want vineyard views, fine dining on site or a hushed adults-only mood, look at Solage or the Upvalley luxury hotels instead. Check current policies on minimum stays, pool hours and children's access to the hottest pools when you book.
