Maison Fleurie, A Four Sisters Inn

A French-country inn of brick, gardens and courtyards in the middle of Yountville, with a breakfast buffet, afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres, a pool and hot tub, and free bikes to ride to dinner.

★★★★★

Maison Fleurie is the best-value way to stay in Yountville, Napa Valley's most walkable and food-focused town, and a charming one. Part of the Four Sisters Inns collection, it occupies three buildings set in about half an acre of gardens on Yount Street, styled after a country inn in the south of France, with a historic main building whose huge brick fireplace anchors the common room. Rooms vary in size and character, each with a queen or king bed, and many add a fireplace, a private patio or a jetted tub. What lifts the value is what is included: a generous breakfast buffet each morning in the main building, with in-room delivery available for a small fee; complimentary afternoon wine, tea and hors d'oeuvres; an outdoor pool and an oversized hot tub; and bicycles to borrow for rides around town and onto the Vine Trail. The location is the real luxury. You are a few steps from Yountville's acclaimed restaurants, bakeries and tasting rooms on Washington Street, so you can walk to dinner and never think about who is driving, and the town's sculpture Art Walk and the V Marketplace are on your doorstep. Hot-air balloons for sunrise flights launch nearby. The trade-offs are typical of a small historic inn: some rooms are compact, walls in older buildings carry sound, and there is no full-service spa or restaurant on site. For couples who want Yountville's address without Yountville's luxury-hotel rates, it is hard to beat.

Living here. Mornings start with the buffet and coffee by the fireplace or in the garden; afternoons bring wine and snacks after tasting appointments; evenings are for walking a few minutes to dinner. The free bikes make it easy to ride to a nearby winery or along the Vine Trail toward Napa, and the pool and hot tub are welcome after a hot day in the valley.

Room craft. If you want space and atmosphere, book a room with a fireplace and a jetted tub, and ask about rooms in the main building for character or the garden buildings for patios. Light sleepers should request a room away from Yount Street. Minimum stays are common on weekends in high season, so midweek stays offer the best value, and harvest-season dates should be booked well ahead.

Who should stay. Couples and food lovers will love it, and it suits travelers who prefer the intimacy of an inn to a resort. It is less suitable for families with young children, who may prefer a hotel with more space, and for anyone wanting full spa facilities, which Bardessono across the street provides at several times the price.
