HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel

Fifteen red minutes above Umeda

HEP FIVE is a youth-fashion shopping and entertainment building in Umeda, a few minutes' walk from Hankyu Osaka-Umeda and JR Osaka stations, and its red Ferris wheel, which sprouts from the roof and turns high above the street, has been one of the landmarks of Kita since the late 1990s. You buy a ticket on the seventh floor, board one of the enclosed, air-conditioned gondolas, and spend about fifteen minutes rising over the city: at the top you are more than a hundred meters above the ground, looking across the rail yards of Osaka Station, the glass towers of Grand Front Osaka and the redeveloped Umekita district, the Umeda Sky Building to the west, and on clear days to the mountains of Rokko and Ikoma. At night the station district glitters below and the wheel itself glows red. Inside the building, a huge red whale hangs in the atrium, a classic meeting point, and the floors below are packed with fashion, accessory and character shops, game arcades and casual restaurants aimed at teenagers and twenty-somethings. The wheel runs daily from late morning until late evening, and tickets are inexpensive, which makes it one of the best-value views in the city, and since the gondolas are enclosed it works in light rain and in winter. It is not as high or as architecturally dramatic as the Umeda Sky Building's Kuchu Teien, and the views are partly framed by the gondola windows, but it is quicker, cheaper, and fun in a way that an observation deck is not.

When to ride. Dusk and after dark are the best times, as the city lights come on; weekend evenings bring queues of couples and groups, while weekday afternoons are often walk-on. The Tiqets entry ticket linked here is a simple way to have your ticket ready on your phone. The wheel may stop in strong wind or thunderstorms, and occasional maintenance days are announced on the building's site. If the queue is long, browse the shops below and come back later, as the line moves quickly.

Who it suits. Couples have long treated the wheel as a classic Osaka date, and a gondola to yourselves for fifteen minutes is a pleasant pause in a busy day. Families find it easy: no long walks, no heights to stand at the edge of, and children enjoy the whale downstairs. People who dislike heights may prefer to stay on the ground, since the gondolas sway slightly in wind. The wheel is popular with anime and idol fans because of occasional themed collaborations, so check what is on.

Around Umeda. Combine the wheel with the Umeda Sky Building's rooftop for two very different views of Kita, or with the underground food halls of the department stores at Osaka Station. The Hankyu Sanbangai and Whity Umeda underground arcades connect most of the area, handy on wet days. Further east, the Ohatsu Tenjin shrine and the Tenjinbashisuji shopping street, one of the longest in Japan, show a more local side of the city.
