Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, opened in 1990 on the Tempozan waterfront, is one of the largest and most celebrated aquariums in the world, and its design is what makes it special. Instead of showing you fish in random tanks, it takes you on a journey around the Ring of Fire, the volcanic rim of the Pacific Ocean, recreating habitats from the forests of Japan and the Aleutian Islands to Monterey Bay, the Gulf of Panama, the Ecuadorian rainforest, Antarctica, the Tasman Sea, the Great Barrier Reef and the Seto Inland Sea. You ride an escalator to the eighth floor, then walk down a gently sloping spiral ramp that winds around the central Pacific Ocean tank, one of the biggest aquarium tanks in the world, so that you see it at every depth, from the sunlit surface to the deep. Swimming in it are the aquarium's stars, whale sharks, the largest fish on earth, along with a manta ray, sharks, rays and great shoals of fish. Around the ramp, the smaller habitats are wonderful: sea otters playing in the Aleutian pool, Pacific white-sided dolphins in the Tasman Sea tank, ringed seals, gentoo penguins, giant spider crabs and a dark, glowing jellyfish gallery. The aquarium holds around 30,000 creatures of about 620 species. Admission is priced by date, roughly 2,700 to 3,500 yen for adults, with lower prices for children and free entry for toddlers, and hours generally run from morning into the evening, varying by season.
Because tickets are priced by date and busy days can mean a queue to get in, the smart move is to buy online for your chosen day, especially for weekends, holidays and school breaks. Weekday mornings are calmest, and the hour before closing can be pleasant too, when families with young children have left. Allow two to three hours; the spiral route is one-way and it is easy to keep looping back to the central tank to watch the whale sharks. Feeding times for various animals are posted at the entrance each day and are worth planning around. In summer, special evening openings are popular and sell out early. The aquarium is fully accessible, with elevators and stroller-friendly ramps, and photography without flash is allowed.
Kaiyukan anchors the Tempozan Harbor Village, a bayside leisure area with a shopping mall of souvenir and food shops and the Tempozan Ferris wheel, about 112 meters tall, which has views over the bay and, after dark, a colorful light display. Sightseeing boats depart from the harbor, including the Santa Maria, a replica of Columbus's flagship, and the Captain Line ferry crosses to Universal Studios Japan in about ten minutes, which makes it easy to combine the aquarium with a USJ visit or a bayside hotel stay.
Getting there takes about twenty-five minutes from central Osaka: take the Chuo subway line to Osakako Station, then walk five minutes to the waterfront. A note on the bay area: the former Expo 2025 site on Yumeshima, the artificial island further out, closed with the Expo in October 2025 and is now largely a construction zone for a planned integrated resort targeted around 2030, so it is not a place to visit; Kaiyukan and Tempozan are the bay area's main attractions. If you are traveling with small children, plan a break midway: there is a cafe and rest area inside, and the shopping mall next door has plenty of family-friendly restaurants and clean facilities for a proper lunch before the Ferris wheel or the ferry. Coin lockers at the station and the mall make it easy to store bags and coats for the visit.
