Hotel Hankyu RESPIRE OSAKA is a modern hotel from the Hankyu Hanshin group, one of the big railway companies of Kansai, built for travelers who want a comfortable, contemporary room in Umeda without the price of a luxury hotel. It sits on the north side of the Osaka Station area, about three minutes' walk from the third-floor connecting bridge exit of JR Osaka Station and five minutes from the north gate of Umeda Station on the Midosuji subway line, in a large new building with shops and restaurants below. Rooms are compact to mid-sized, clean-lined and quiet, with good beds, efficient bathrooms and the thoughtful details Japanese hotels do well, and all rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking area inside the building. The bright, spacious restaurant looks out over a Japanese garden and serves breakfast that is a notch above the typical business-hotel spread. Practical facilities matter on a long trip: a free fitness room for guests, coin laundry and a laundry service, luggage delivery for a fee, an automatic currency exchange machine, and staff who speak English, Korean and Chinese. Limousine buses run to Osaka Itami Airport in about thirty minutes and to Kansai International in about an hour from the Umeda area. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out at noon, and parking is available.

Location strengths. Umeda is the best place in Osaka for transport, shopping and dining in all weathers, and Respire puts you on its newer, more spacious north side, near the Grand Front Osaka complex and the Umekita park district, and an easy walk to the Umeda Sky Building and the HEP FIVE Ferris wheel. The Midosuji line takes you to Shinsaibashi and Namba in under ten minutes, JR trains run to Kyoto, Kobe and Universal Studios Japan, and the Hankyu lines head north to Minoo Park and the Cup Noodles Museum.

The trade-offs. This is a large hotel, so check-in queues can form at peak times, and the lobby is efficient rather than intimate. Standard rooms are fine for two but tight with big suitcases; families or long stays should book larger room types. Note that Hankyu operates several hotels in Umeda with similar names, including the newer and pricier Hotel Hankyu GRAN RESPIRE OSAKA, so double-check the property when booking and when giving a taxi driver directions.

Who it suits. Couples and solo travelers who want modern comfort at a fair price, business visitors, and first-timers who want to be central without the bustle of Minami. Rates vary sharply by season and day of the week, so compare dates; Osaka's accommodation tax is added per person per night depending on the rate.
