For decades the Shin Kabukiza theater on Midosuji Avenue in Namba was one of Osaka's best-loved buildings, its facade a stack of curved, temple-like gables that made it look like a giant wooden palace in the middle of the modern city. When the theater moved and the site was redeveloped, the architect Kengo Kuma, designer of Tokyo's National Stadium, created a tower that recalls the old facade in its lower section, wrapped in his signature layered style, and Hotel Royal Classic Osaka opened in it in December 2019. The result is one of the most distinctive buildings on Midosuji, and a hotel with genuine character. Inside, the hotel describes itself as a museum hotel, with more than a hundred works of contemporary art displayed through the public spaces and accessible to everyone, not just guests. Rooms are modern and calm, in warm woods and soft tones, larger than the Namba business-hotel norm, with good bathrooms and city views from the upper floors; suites and premium rooms add space and views down Midosuji. The hotel has a restaurant and bar, and is also a popular wedding venue, which can mean well-dressed parties in the lobby at weekends. Location is excellent: the building is directly connected to Exit 12 of Namba Station on the Midosuji line, and Nankai Namba for the airport express, Dotonbori, Kuromon Market and Shinsaibashi are all within a short walk. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out at noon.

Who it suits. Couples and design lovers who want a hotel with a story, and first-timers who want the convenience of Namba without the noise of a hotel right on Dotonbori. The direct subway link makes it easy for day trips, and Nankai Namba, with trains to Kansai International Airport and to Koyasan, is a few minutes away, which is handy at both ends of a trip.

The trade-offs. Rates sit above the standard business hotels of Namba, though usually below the international luxury brands in Umeda. Weddings and events can make public areas busy on weekends. The hotel's art and architecture are the draw; facilities such as a pool or large spa are not, so if you want an onsen-style bath, look elsewhere. As with all Namba hotels, prices rise steeply during holidays and festival periods, so book early.

Around the hotel. Walk north along Midosuji to Dotonbori and the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade, east to Kuromon Market for breakfast, or south to Namba Parks and the Namba Yasaka Shrine. Osaka's accommodation tax is charged per person per night depending on the room rate.
