Longwood Gardens is the day trip that makes a Philadelphia trip feel complete. About an hour's drive southwest in the Brandywine Valley, it is the former estate of industrialist Pierre S. du Pont, who spent decades in the early twentieth century turning a farm and arboretum into a horticultural showplace on a scale few gardens anywhere attempt: more than a thousand acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows, a huge conservatory complex, and fountain gardens engineered with the enthusiasm of a man who loved hydraulics. The Main Fountain Garden's choreographed shows, the Italian Water Garden and the conservatory's exhibition hall are the classic sights, and the 2024 completion of Longwood Reimagined added a new West Conservatory and redesigned surrounding gardens, the most ambitious expansion in the garden's history. The seasons drive everything. In autumn, Autumn's Colors runs through November 15, 2026, with the Chrysanthemum Festival filling the conservatory — including the famous Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, a single plant trained to bear hundreds of blooms. Then the gardens close briefly for changeover (fully closed November 16 and 17, outdoor gardens only on November 18 and 19), and A Longwood Christmas opens November 20, 2026, running to January 10, 2027 with decorated conservatories and outdoor lights, open daily until 11pm. Timed admission tickets are required and peak holiday dates sell out, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
The holiday season is Longwood's busiest and most spectacular. A Longwood Christmas fills the conservatory with themed trees, flowers and installations, and the outdoor gardens glow with lights after dark; the evening is the reason most people come, and the extended hours run daily to 11pm. Peak days are Friday through Sunday from late November and every day from mid-December into the first days of January, so weekday visits in late November or early December are the smart booking. Dress warmly for the outdoor portion and give yourself time to get inside the conservatory early in the evening, before the busiest entry windows.
In other seasons, plan for at least half a day. Spring brings bulbs and the flowering trees; summer brings the evening fountain shows; autumn brings color and the chrysanthemums. The Meadow Garden's trails and the treehouses suit families, and the conservatory's children's garden is a favorite with small kids. Dining runs from casual cafe options to a full-service restaurant and a seasonal beer garden, with hours varying by date. Note that Longwood is closed some Tuesdays outside the holiday season, and hours shift through the year — the official site's calendar is the authority.
Getting there and pairing: Longwood is in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, roughly thirty miles southwest of Center City; a car is by far the easiest way, with free parking on site. Kennett Square's small downtown — the self-styled mushroom capital of the world — is minutes away for lunch, and the Brandywine Valley's other estates and museums make a fuller weekend. For couples it is one of the most romantic outings near the city; for families at Christmas, it is the trip they will remember.
