An hour east of downtown, the Valley ends abruptly at the Superstition Mountains, a towering volcanic wall that glows gold and crimson in late light and has generated more legends than any range in Arizona. Lost Dutchman State Park, at the foot of the range on the Apache Trail (State Route 88) just beyond Apache Junction, is the best base for exploring it: a desert park with a campground, picnic areas and trails ranging from the easy Native Plant Trail to the Treasure Loop, which rises to views of the cliffs, and the famously steep Siphon Draw Trail, which climbs into a slickrock basin and, for strong and experienced scramblers, on to the summit of the Flatiron. A modest per-vehicle day-use fee applies. The park is named for the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, the legendary rich vein supposedly found by German immigrant Jacob Waltz in the nineteenth century and never rediscovered despite generations of searchers. Just before the park, Goldfield Ghost Town is a rebuilt 1890s mining town with a main street of shops, a saloon, a mine tour, a small railroad and staged gunfights — touristy, but cheerful, especially with children. Beyond the park, SR 88 continues as the historic Apache Trail, a winding road through canyons and past viewpoints to Canyon Lake and the tiny settlement of Tortilla Flat, with its saloon, shops and small museum. Important for this season: Canyon Lake was closed in September 2026 for an approximately sixteen-week dam-safety drawdown, so lake access, boating and the Dolly Steamboat cruises are suspended until around January 2027, while the road and Tortilla Flat remain open.

Beyond Tortilla Flat the Apache Trail becomes a different proposition. The stretch over Fish Creek Hill, among the most spectacular and nerve-racking pieces of road in Arizona, has been rebuilt after years of closure only as a primitive road, open to high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and UTVs, with trailers prohibited; monsoon storms in summer 2026 briefly closed the unpaved section again before ADOT reopened it in July. Rental sedans should turn around at Tortilla Flat. If you have the right vehicle and experience, check the state's 511 road service before setting out, and allow a full day for the loop to Roosevelt Dam and back via Globe.

For most visitors, the best Superstition day is simpler: leave Phoenix early, hike the Treasure Loop or the lower Siphon Draw in the morning while the mountain is in shade, have lunch at Goldfield or Tortilla Flat, and drive the Apache Trail's paved section for the canyon views. Late afternoon light on the Superstition cliffs is the photograph. The Siphon Draw route to the Flatiron is a serious, all-day scramble with significant exposure near the top and a history of rescues; attempt it only with experience, early starts and plenty of water, and never in warm weather.

Once Canyon Lake refills and reopens (expected around the turn of the year), the Dolly Steamboat's scenic, dinner and bighorn-sheep cruises return and make an easy, relaxing addition to the day. Note that day trips to Sedona or the Grand Canyon head north rather than east and need a much longer day; the Superstitions are the Valley's closest true wilderness and the most rewarding half-day escape from the city.

Good Questions

Is Canyon Lake open?

Not at the moment. It closed in September 2026 for an approximately sixteen-week dam-safety drawdown, with cruises expected to resume around early January 2027. The road and Tortilla Flat stay open.

Can we drive the whole Apache Trail?

Only with a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle beyond Tortilla Flat, where the Fish Creek Hill section is a primitive road. Check the state 511 service first.

Which trail at Lost Dutchman should we hike?

The Treasure Loop is a moderate, scenic choice for most visitors. Siphon Draw is steep, and continuing to the Flatiron is a serious scramble for experienced hikers only.

Is Goldfield Ghost Town worth it?

With kids, yes: it is a rebuilt mining town with shops, a mine tour, a small railroad and staged gunfights. Adults may find it touristy but fun.

How far is it from Phoenix?

About an hour east of downtown via the US 60 and Apache Junction.
