Pisa Cathedral, Camposanto and Museums

The marble heart of the Piazza dei Miracoli, beyond the tower

The Leaning Tower gets the photographs, but the Cathedral it belongs to is the real masterpiece of the square. Begun in 1064, when Pisa was a rich maritime republic, it set the style known as Pisan Romanesque: tiers of slender arcades in white and grey marble, bronze doors and a vast interior of striped columns and gilded ceiling. Inside, look for Giovanni Pisano’s carved pulpit and the bronze lamp linked by legend to Galileo’s study of the pendulum. Across the lawn, the Camposanto is a long marble cloister built around earth said to have been brought from the Holy Land, lined with Roman sarcophagi and medieval frescoes, including the haunting Triumph of Death. The Sinopie Museum shows the red underdrawings revealed when those frescoes were damaged in 1944, and the Opera del Duomo Museum holds the original sculptures and treasures of the square.

How it works: this reserved-entrance ticket, sold through Tiqets on behalf of the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, covers the Cathedral, the Camposanto, the Sinopie Museum and the Opera del Duomo Museum, plus booking fees. It does not include the Leaning Tower or the Baptistery. You show the ticket on your phone at the entrance of each monument, and it can be cancelled free of charge up to twenty-four hours before your visit. In November 2026 the Camposanto and the museums open from 9:00 to 18:00 and the Cathedral from 10:00, with last entry thirty minutes before closing. Cathedral hours can change on Sundays and religious holidays.

What you see: start in the Cathedral while the light comes through the upper windows, then cross to the Camposanto, where the scale of the cloister and the quiet are a relief after the crowds on the lawn. Spend time with the restored frescoes and the Roman tombs reused by medieval Pisans. The Sinopie Museum, on the south side of the square, is easy to skip but shouldn’t be: the bold preparatory drawings are striking. Finish at the Opera del Duomo Museum, which has a terrace looking straight at the tower.

Who it suits: travellers who don’t want or can’t do the climb, families with children under eight, and art lovers who want to understand the square rather than just tick it off.
