★★★★★

Iberostar Selection Bávaro Suites is a polished, well-run all-inclusive that balances family facilities with real comfort, and it is our pick for families and couples who want a little more space. Every room is a suite, from junior suites with garden, pool or ocean views to connecting family suites and a penthouse on the beachfront. The resort sits right on Playa Bávaro, on a Blue Flag beach, and guests get free non-motorized water sports. Dining is a highlight: alongside the Los Haitises buffet there are specialty restaurants including Brave Steakhouse, Kabuki for Japanese, Il Forno for Italian, El Tapatío for Mexican, La Dorada for Greek and Bistró La Coupole for French, plus the 24-hour Star Café and several bars. Children are looked after by Star Camp, split into age groups from toddlers to young teens, and there is a pirate-ship pool. Golfers have an 18-hole P.B. Dye course that the World Golf Awards named the best in the country in 2022. Iberostar’s Wave of Change program runs a coral nursery and laboratory and keeps the resort free of single-use plastics. Guests can also use the facilities of two sister Iberostar resorts next door.

Location and getting around: the resort is on the Arena Gorda road in Bávaro, about half an hour by car from Punta Cana International Airport. El Cortecito, with its shops and beach bars, is a walk of about ten minutes along the sand, and most excursions collect from the lobby.

Rooms: the roughly 600 suites are spacious and individually furnished, and family suites come with kids’ welcome packs. Ask for a beachside building if you want to be close to the sea.

Who it suits: families with children up to their mid-teens, couples who want a suite and good food, golfers and divers, since there is a PADI dive center on site.

Good to know: some specialty restaurants need reservations and have a dress code, and smoking in rooms or on terraces carries a heavy cleaning fee. Self-parking is free, check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is at noon. The DC-6 nightclub is for guests 18 and over.
