Riga Cathedral

The great organ on Dome Square

Riga Cathedral, the Doms, was founded in the early thirteenth century and grew over the centuries into a huge brick church that mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque work. It is the Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of Riga and the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. Inside, look for the carved pulpit, the stained glass and the memorials, and step into the cloister, one of the oldest parts of the complex. The great treasure is the organ, built by the German firm Walcker in the 1880s and long one of the largest in the world when it was installed. The cathedral puts it to work in a busy concert programme, from Friday evening concerts to the short Concerto Piccolo recitals, and hearing it is the best way to experience the building.

How to hear the organ: the Concerto Piccolo is a roughly twenty-minute organ recital held almost every day at noon, with extra afternoon sessions on some Sundays, and tickets cost much less than a full concert. Friday evenings usually bring a longer themed concert with guest performers, and the holiday season adds special programmes. Book through the cathedral’s concert page.

Visiting the building: outside concert times you can visit the nave and cloister with an entry ticket. Dress respectfully and avoid wandering during services. The cathedral is on Dome Square, the largest square in the Old Town, where the Christmas market is usually held in December.

Tips: arrive ten minutes before a recital to get a good seat, and pair the visit with a walk to Riga Castle and the Three Brothers, both a few minutes away.
