First-Timer's Guide to Roatán

What to reserve ahead on Roatán, how to get around, how many days you need and how the reef trips, beaches and island sights fit together, including a cruise-port day.

Roatán is a long, narrow, green island in Honduras's Bay Islands, about 40 miles long and no more than 5 miles wide. It lies on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, and the water is the main attraction. Two cruise terminals serve the island, Mahogany Bay and the Port of Roatán near Coxen Hole, and cruise season runs roughly from November to April with several ship visits a week. Many visitors arrive for a single day, so this guide works for a port stop as well as for a week.

What to book ahead

Reserve the water experiences first. The West End reef snorkel by boat is the easiest way to see the reef, and it is private, so your group sets the pace. Certified divers should consider the two-dive excursion with transport from the cruise port. If you want a turnkey beach day, choose between the private islands, Little French Key and Maya Key, and read the refund terms because weather cancellations are often not refunded. The zipline canopy tour has strong reviews and a swim at the end. Everything else, from West Bay Beach to Punta Gorda, can be decided on the day.

Getting around

Roatán has one main road along the island, and taxis and tour vans are the usual way to get around. Fares are negotiated, so agree the price and the return time before you set off. West Bay and West End are the main destinations for most cruise visitors, according to the Roatan Tourism Bureau, and both are a ride across the island from the terminals. English is widely spoken, and you do not need Spanish to get by, though a few words are appreciated. For the east side, such as Punta Gorda, allow much more time.

How many days

With one day, choose one headline: a boat snorkel, a private island, or a beach day at West Bay Beach. Three days lets you add a canopy zipline, Gumbalimba Park and a morning walk at Carambola Botanical Gardens. A week is relaxed and leaves room for diving, a day on the east side and a long beach afternoon.

Where the headline sights fit

West Bay Beach is on the western tip, with the resorts and calm water. West End Village is close by, with the dive shops, restaurants and the meeting point for the boat snorkel. Gumbalimba Park is near West Bay, and Carambola sits on the hill above West End. The private islands are off the coast near the cruise piers, and Punta Gorda is on the east side, with a very different pace. The Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences dolphin programs are at Anthony's Key Resort; read the details and decide whether they suit you.

Cruise-day tips

Confirm your all-aboard time before you plan, leave at least an hour of buffer and arrange your taxi return before you head off. Do not stack a long drive with a long activity. If you book an excursion, listen for the meeting instructions, which differ for Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole. Carry small bills for tips and extras.

Practical comfort

The sun is strong year round, so bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water, and wear a rash guard if you snorkel. Early November is the tail of hurricane season, so keep plans flexible and check the forecast.

A simple plan

Day one, West Bay Beach and sunset. Day two, a morning boat snorkel from West End and an afternoon at Gumbalimba Park. Day three, the zipline and a private island day. Day four, Carambola and Punta Gorda.
