Hotel Goldgasse

Old Town (Goldgasse)

Hotel Goldgasse

A small boutique hotel in a centuries-old house on a quiet old town lane between the cathedral and the Getreidegasse, with rooms themed on Mozart operas and the Salzburg Festival, and a traditional Austrian restaurant downstairs.

★★★★★

Hotel Goldgasse sits on Goldgasse, a narrow lane in the oldest part of the old town, a minute or two from the cathedral, the Residenz, Mozartplatz and the Getreidegasse, and close to the Festival halls. The building has centuries of history behind it, with medieval wooden ceilings and old marble floors, and was once home to a coppersmith’s workshop, an echo of which survives in its copper-themed furniture. There are only around sixteen rooms, each with its own character: many are named after Mozart operas such as The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni, and large festival photographs by Luigi Caputo fill walls and furnishings. The rooftop Jedermann suite has its own small roof terrace with a view of the fortress. Downstairs, the wood-panelled Gasthof Goldgasse serves breakfast and classic Austrian dishes made with regional, seasonal produce, such as crisp fried chicken and Salzburger Nockerl, the city’s famous soufflé dessert.

Location and getting around: you could hardly be more central. Everything in the old town is on foot, the fortress funicular is a few minutes away behind Kapitelplatz, and the Mozartsteg and Staatsbrücke bridges lead to the right bank. Because the old town is largely car-free, drivers use a nearby public garage for a fee, so ask the hotel about drop-off and directions before you arrive.

Rooms: as the house is old, rooms vary in size and shape, from compact doubles to larger rooms and the rooftop suite. The design mixes historic architecture with contemporary furniture and art, and the double rooms have been newly designed. The hotel is officially rated four stars and markets itself as a small luxury hotel.

Who it suits: couples, music lovers and Festival-goers who want character and an unbeatable address over facilities. It is less suited to travellers who need a gym, spa or large family rooms.

Good to know: the restaurant is open daily from noon until late, so dinner is just downstairs. Lanes outside are quiet at night, but the old town bells ring, so light sleepers may want earplugs. Book early for the Festival in summer and for Advent weekends.
