Hotel Stein

Right Bank (Staatsbrücke)

Hotel Stein

An adults-only lifestyle hotel at the Staatsbrücke on the right bank of the Salzach, famous for its seventh-floor Steinterrasse rooftop bar with views over the river, the old town domes and the fortress.

★★★★★

Hotel Stein stands on the Giselakai at the foot of the Staatsbrücke, the main bridge into the old town, where the right bank’s Andräviertel meets the historic centre. It is best known for the Steinterrasse, its seventh-floor rooftop bar and restaurant, which has one of the classic views of Salzburg: the river below, the cathedral domes and church towers opposite and the fortress on its cliff. The terrace is open daily from breakfast until midnight, and until one in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays, with hot food until the evening, and it is popular with locals, so reservations are wise. The hotel is adults-only, accepting guests over 16, which keeps the mood calm. Rooms are air-conditioned with a minibar of non-alcoholic drinks included in the rate, and there is a fitness room and a small spa with a Finnish sauna.

Location and getting around: cross the Staatsbrücke and you are in the old town in a couple of minutes, with the Getreidegasse and Mozart’s Birthplace just beyond. The airport bus stop at Salzburg Rathaus is about a three-minute walk across the bridge, and the Steingasse, Mirabell Gardens and Linzer Gasse are all close on the right bank.

Rooms: modern, stylish rooms with air conditioning, an included soft-drinks minibar and free Wi-Fi. There is a specially equipped accessible room, and allergy-friendly rooms can be arranged if you tell the hotel in advance. Ask for a river-facing room for views of the old town.

Who it suits: couples and adult friends who want a central, design-led base with a rooftop bar on the doorstep. It is not an option for families with children under 16.

Good to know: the breakfast buffet on the seventh floor is charged separately, with à la carte options. Private parking is in a garage a few hundred metres away on Imbergstraße for a daily fee and must be reserved, and there is a loading zone at the entrance. Dogs are welcome for a fee, the sauna costs extra and needs registering at reception, and reception is staffed around the clock. Booking direct earns a small discount.
