The San Antonio Zoo is one of the most rewarding zoos in Texas and a genuine San Antonio institution. Founded in 1914, it sits in the shaded, spring-fed grounds of Brackenridge Park, a few miles north of downtown, partly inside an old limestone quarry whose walls give some habitats a dramatic backdrop. The collection is large — more than 750 species — with a strong focus on endangered wildlife and conservation work, and it is laid out in a series of habitat zones: Africa Live, with hippos you can watch underwater, crocodiles and fish; Amazonia, a lush walk-through of South American species; Big Cat Valley and the Cat Grotto; Gibbon Forest; the Reptile House; the Friedrich Aquarium; and Kronkosky's Tiny Tot Nature Spot, a nature play area for small children. The newest showpiece is Congo Falls, a two-acre gorilla habitat with a seventy-foot observation tower, which gives visitors a rare treetop view of the troop. Feeding and keeper experiences with giraffes, hippos, rhinos and kangaroos are offered for an extra fee, and the zoo now incorporates Kiddie Park, the historic children's amusement park that dates from 1925 and is billed as the oldest of its kind in America, with its carousel and small rides. A little train runs through Brackenridge Park beside the zoo. The Tiqets ticket is a flexible any-day general admission, valid during operating hours and scanned at the Entry Plaza; it is nonrefundable. Hours and open days vary by season, and the zoo runs popular events such as Zoo Boo in October and holiday lights in winter, so check the official calendar.
The zoo is best in the morning, when the animals are active and the heat has not yet set in. Start with the big-ticket habitats — Congo Falls for the gorillas, Africa Live for the hippos, then Big Cat Valley — while energy is high, and save the aquarium and reptile house for the warmer middle of the day. Plan around keeper talks and feedings posted at the entrance. The paths are mostly flat and stroller-friendly, there are shade structures and misters, and the Tiny Tot Nature Spot is an excellent stop for children under five, with water play, sand and climbing.
Kiddie Park is a charming bonus: classic small rides and a vintage carousel that several generations of San Antonians remember from childhood, now part of the zoo experience. Combine the zoo with the rest of Brackenridge Park, a large green space along the upper San Antonio River with picnic areas, the Japanese Tea Garden in an old quarry nearby, and the Witte Museum of natural history and Texas heritage, which marks its centennial in 2026. Together they make a full family day just north of downtown.
Logistics: the zoo is about ten minutes by car from downtown, and there is parking nearby that fills on weekends and holidays. Public transit and rideshares are an option. Bring water and sunscreen in summer and a jacket for winter evening events. Food is available in the zoo, though many families picnic in Brackenridge Park instead. If you are visiting several paid attractions, Tiqets also offers zoo bundles with the Witte Museum and SeaWorld that can save money.
