The Han River is a kilometer wide as it flows through Seoul, and its banks are lined almost continuously with parks — twelve of them under the Hangang Parks umbrella, stretching for tens of kilometers through the city. They are Seoul's backyard, and spending an evening on them is one of the most local experiences a visitor can have. The most popular is Yeouido Hangang Park, on the island that holds the National Assembly and the city's financial towers, with broad lawns, a water-light plaza, fountains and a marina; in early April the nearby avenues of cherry trees host one of the city's biggest blossom festivals, and in autumn the river becomes the stage for the Seoul International Fireworks Festival. Banpo Hangang Park, on the south bank, is known for the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain, which sends arcs of illuminated water off the sides of Banpo Bridge on summer and early-autumn evenings, and the floating islands of Some Sevit beside it. Ttukseom, in the east, has swimming pools in summer and the creative Jabe Tower, and Mangwon, near Hongdae, links to a much-loved traditional market. Between them, continuous cycle paths run along both banks, and Seoul's public bikes and rental shops make it easy to ride for an hour or a whole afternoon. Admission is free and the parks are open every hour of the day, all year.
The classic Han River evening goes like this. Buy a picnic mat or bring one, find a spot on the lawn as the sun sets behind the bridges, and either order fried chicken and beer — delivery riders bring it straight to designated zones in the parks — or head to one of the riverside convenience stores, which have instant-ramyeon cooking machines that boil your noodles in a foil bowl in a couple of minutes. It is cheap, delicious and a scene straight out of a K-drama, and on warm weekend nights the lawns fill with friends, couples and families doing exactly the same thing. Bring a jacket after dark in spring and autumn; the river breeze is cool.
Getting on the water is easier than ever. The Hangang Bus, a commuter ferry service launched in September 2025, runs along the river between a series of piers, including Yeouido and Jamsil; after early teething problems it relaunched its full route in March 2026 and has proved popular with sightseers as well as commuters, especially for sunset sailings. Sightseeing cruises from Yeouido also run evening trips, some with dinner or music. On land, Seoul's public-bike scheme has docks along the riverbanks, and you can rent tandem bikes and family bikes at several parks.
Choose your park by mood. Yeouido is the all-rounder and the easiest to reach from Yeouinaru Station on Line 5; Banpo is the place for the rainbow fountain and night views of the bridge, from Express Bus Terminal station; Ttukseom, at Ttukseom Resort Station on Line 7, has the most activities; and Mangwon pairs perfectly with Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong. In summer, the parks host night markets and outdoor events, while in winter, though bleak, they offer crisp clear views and empty paths for a brisk walk.
