Moxy Seoul Insadong puts budget-conscious travelers in the most atmospheric part of the old city at a sensible price. Part of Marriott's Moxy brand, which is designed for younger, social travelers, it sits just off Donhwamun-ro, the street that leads north to Changdeokgung's main gate, and its location is excellent: the entrance is directly in front of an exit of Jongno 3-ga Station, served by Lines 1, 3 and 5, Ikseon-dong's hanok cafe lanes are on the doorstep, Insadong's tea houses and craft shops are a few minutes' walk west, and Jongmyo Shrine, Changdeokgung and the Secret Garden, Bukchon and Gwangjang Market are all within easy walking distance. That makes it one of the most efficient bases in Seoul for a history-focused first trip. The hotel itself follows the Moxy formula, and does it well. The ground-floor Play Moxy area has board games available around the clock, and a second-floor lounge offers complimentary coffee and tea twenty-four hours a day, with plenty of spots to work or hang out. Rooms are compact and cleverly designed rather than spacious, with walk-in showers, large flat-screen TVs, motion-activated night lighting, hooks and open storage instead of bulky furniture, and a crisp, colorful look. The rooftop Bar Moxy is the highlight, serving cocktails and music with views across the low rooftops of Jongno toward the mountains and the towers of downtown. A twenty-four-hour fitness center completes the facilities.
Practical details matter at this price point. Breakfast is not included in standard rates, though a breakfast buffet is offered, and the streets around Jongno 3-ga are full of inexpensive Korean breakfast and coffee options. There is no on-site parking or shuttle, so arrive by subway, airport limousine bus or taxi; for ride-hailing apps, enter the hotel name in English or Korean. The minimum check-in age is nineteen, and the property is smoke-free and pet-free.
Who is it for? Solo travelers, friends and couples who will be out all day and want a fun, well-located base will find it excellent value. The rooms are small, so families or travelers with large suitcases should check room sizes carefully before booking, and those wanting a pool or spa should look at a full-service hotel. The surrounding streets are lively in the evening, with pojangmacha tent bars and barbecue restaurants around Jongno 3-ga, but quiet late at night.
In the evening, walk to Ikseon-dong for dinner in a converted hanok, browse Insadong, or take the subway two stops to the Cheonggyecheon stream. On a palace day, Changdeokgung's gate is a short stroll up the street, so you can be first in line for a Secret Garden tour.
