The Shilla has long been regarded as one of Korea's most prestigious hotels, the place where state guests, celebrities and society weddings gather, and its setting is unique among Seoul's luxury addresses. It stands on the eastern slopes of Namsan in Jangchung-dong, backed by the forested mountain and close to a section of the restored Seoul City Wall, so it feels more like an urban resort than a downtown tower. The hotel has around 460 rooms and suites, spacious and quietly luxurious, with views either over the green flank of Namsan or across the city skyline. Its signature is Urban Island, an outdoor pool complex and garden set against the mountainside, with a heated pool open through much of the year, cabanas and an evening scene of moonlight swimming with the city lights beyond; an indoor pool and a gym complete the fitness facilities, and the Guerlain spa is one of the best-known in the city. The dining is outstanding. La Yeon, on the top floor, is one of the most celebrated Korean restaurants in the country, a Michelin-starred room serving refined royal and seasonal Korean cuisine with views over the city, and Palsun offers high-end Chinese cooking among an art collection that includes white porcelain; the hotel also has Japanese, French-influenced and all-day dining, a lounge and a lobby lounge famous among locals for its seasonal desserts and its prized mango shaved ice in summer. A luxury shopping arcade and the grounds' outdoor sculpture garden add to the sense of a self-contained retreat.

The Shilla's great appeal is balance. You get the calm of a resort — the pool, the gardens, the mountain trails — while remaining minutes by taxi from downtown, Myeongdong and Dongdaemun. Jogging and walking paths start near the hotel and lead along the city wall and up toward N Seoul Tower, which makes a morning walk on Namsan one of the pleasures of staying here. Service is famously meticulous, and the hotel is a favorite with families and with travelers marking a special occasion, especially when the outdoor pool is open.

The location requires a little planning. Dongguk University Station on Line 3 is the nearest subway stop, a short walk downhill, and plentiful taxis cover the rest; but it is not a step-out-the-door-into-the-crowds address like Myeongdong. Itaewon, Myeongdong and the DDP are each a short ride away. Rates are firmly in the luxury bracket and peak around weddings, holidays and big events, and the Urban Island pool can carry its own access rules and charges by season or package, so check what is included when you book.

Book La Yeon well ahead, especially for dinner; it is one of the toughest tables in Seoul. In summer, the lounge's mango shaved-ice dessert draws long queues even from non-guests. If you want the full resort feel, choose a mountain-view room and a package that includes Urban Island access, and plan at least one unhurried afternoon at the hotel itself.
