National Archaeological Museum

Thracian gold under Ottoman domes

The National Archaeological Museum is the best museum in central Sofia and a building worth seeing for itself. It occupies the former Grand Mosque, built in the fifteenth century and the oldest Ottoman building in the city, whose domed prayer hall now holds Roman sculpture, mosaics and inscriptions under its nine domes. The galleries around it trace the lands of Bulgaria from the earliest settlements through the Thracians, with gold and silver treasures, to the Greek colonies of the Black Sea, Roman Serdica and the medieval kingdoms. It is part of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum, so the displays draw on the latest excavations. It sits on the square behind the Presidency, a minute from the Rotunda of St George and the Serdica ruins.

When to go: from November to April the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays; from May to October it opens daily, with last admission half an hour before closing. Entry is free for everyone on the last Sunday of each month, which makes it busier than usual.

Tickets and tours: adult tickets are inexpensive, and there are family tickets for parents with children under sixteen. Guided tours in English and a mobile guide are available for a fee, and the guided tour is worth it for the treasury rooms.

Making the most of it: start in the old prayer hall for the atmosphere, then the treasury for the Thracian gold. Afterwards, step outside to watch the guard at the Presidency, walk into the courtyard behind it for the Rotunda of St George, and cross to the Largo to see the Roman streets of Serdica. All of it fits into one rewarding morning.
