Boyana Church

Medieval frescoes painted in 1259

Boyana Church is small enough to miss, and one of the great treasures of medieval art. It sits in a leafy garden in the Boyana district on the slopes of Vitosha, and was built in stages from the tenth to the nineteenth century. Its fame rests on the second layer of murals: the founder’s inscription records that the church was completely painted in 1259. The unknown master gave his saints real faces and gestures, a century and more before similar realism appeared elsewhere. In the vestibule are portraits of the donors, Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava, among the most celebrated images in Bulgarian art. The church is a branch of the National Museum of History and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.

How visits work: the church is open daily, and the museum asks that visits be requested in advance, with priority for those who booked. Groups enter in turns because the interior is tiny and the frescoes are fragile, so expect a short, timed look rather than a long linger. The church is closed to visitors for a disinfection break twice a day, in the morning and early afternoon, so avoid arriving just before those slots. Photography inside is not permitted.

What to look for: the donor portraits of Kaloyan and Desislava, the Christ Euergetes, the scenes from the life of St Nicholas with their glimpses of thirteenth-century daily life, and the overall warmth of the colour.

Getting there: Boyana is on the southern edge of the city. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the easiest option; buses also run. The National Museum of History is a short ride away, so the two make a natural half-day together, and the garden is a pleasant place to wait your turn.
