Where to Stay on St. Maarten and St. Martin

A guide to the island's main areas, Maho, Philipsburg, Grand Case, Orient Bay and Baie Longue, with five hotels matched to different budgets and travel styles.

The island is small, so your base mostly decides your mood: lively Dutch-side resorts and the cruise port to the south, or the quieter French side to the north. All of the places below are within about thirty minutes of each other, so you can mix and match with taxis, buses or a rental car. Here are five hotels matched to different budgets and travel styles.

Maho and the airport side: planes and all-inclusive

Maho Village combines a beach, shops, a casino across the street and nightlife, with the airport next door. Sonesta Maho Beach All Inclusive Resort Casino and Spa has about 420 rooms, an Oasis Pool with a swim-up bar and slides, and a rooftop sky deck due to open in June 2026. It suits families and groups who want one price and plane spotting from their own beach. Expect aircraft noise during the day and a social, busy resort.

Philipsburg: convenient and budget friendly

The Dutch capital has the cruise port, Front Street shops and the Great Bay boardwalk. Seaview Beach Hotel is the budget-friendly pick, with sea-view rooms, studios with kitchenettes and a beachfront pool on the boardwalk. There is no parking or elevator, so it suits short stays and travelers who do not mind stairs. It is ideal for a night before or after a cruise or for visitors who want to walk to dinner.

Grand Case: the food village

On the French side, Grand Case is the best base for diners. Grand Case Beach Club is an all-suite resort with kitchens, two private coves and a short walk to the village restaurants and lolos. It suits couples and families who want a suite and a relaxed atmosphere rather than a big-resort scene. A rental car or taxi helps for Orient Bay, Pinel and Marigot.

Orient Bay: beach clubs and watersports

On the east coast, Orient Bay has the island's liveliest beach and a village with restaurants and shops. La Playa Orient Bay is a four-star boutique hotel with junior suites, a pool, spa and direct beach access. It has an American breakfast buffet and free parking, but the beach restaurant is daytime only. It suits couples and active travelers.

Baie Longue: quiet luxury

On the western end of the French side, La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel, sits on a long bay with suites, cottages and pool villas, and reopened its villas after a renovation in late 2023. It is quiet, spacious and service-led, with dinner in Grand Case or Marigot a short drive away. It is the splurge for honeymoons, anniversaries and family groups who want privacy.

Choosing between them

Pick Philipsburg for value and convenience, Maho for families and an all-inclusive, Grand Case for food, Orient Bay for beaches and La Samanna for a once-in-a-while treat. If you want to see both sides of the island, base yourself on the side that suits your priorities and use tours and taxis for the other. Book early for the winter peak, check each hotel's current restaurant and pool status, and confirm cancellation terms in the hurricane season, which runs through November.
