citizenM Taipei North Gate was the brand’s first hotel in Asia, and it stands right opposite the North Gate, one of the old city gates of Taipei. Its location is hard to beat for a first trip: Beimen MRT station is about four minutes on foot, Taipei Main Station and the Airport MRT terminal about ten, and Ximending a short walk south. The hotel has around 265 rooms in a single category, each with an extra-large bed, a rain shower and a tablet that controls the lights, blinds and temperature, plus views over the city or towards the Tamsui River. Check-in is by self-service kiosk, and the colourful living room downstairs doubles as a lounge, co-working space and canteenM, which serves coffee and food around the clock and runs a lively bar.
Living in it: the lobby is full of design books and comfortable corners, which makes it a sociable base. Walk to Dadaocheng and Dihua Street for old shophouses and tea merchants, or ride a few stops to Longshan Temple and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
Trade-offs: rooms are compact, with the bed taking most of the space, and the bathroom pods are open in style, so it suits couples and solo travellers more than families. The surrounding roads are busy. The brand is now part of Marriott, so check the latest rates there as well.
