Telliskivi Creative City

Tallinn’s railway works reborn as a creative quarter

Telliskivi Creative City occupies a former railway factory complex just west of the Old Town, behind the Balti Jaam station. The works built and repaired locomotives and carriages before the Second World War, stood empty after independence, and began their new life in 2009. Today the old brick halls hold restaurants, cafés, bars, independent design shops, studios, street art and venues, and the complex hosts markets and events. Fotografiska Tallinn, the photography centre, has changing exhibitions, and its restaurant has been recognised by the Michelin guide for sustainable cooking. Around it spreads Kalamaja, a district of colourful wooden houses, while the renovated Balti Jaama market next to the station sells produce, street food and antiques. Wandering is free.

How to do it: walk from the Old Town past the Balti Jaam station, about ten minutes, or take tram 1, 2 or 5. Start with the Balti Jaama market for a snack, then cross to Telliskivi for shops and street art, and finish with a drink or dinner. Fotografiska is the main ticketed sight; its café can be visited without a ticket.

Kalamaja: continue into the quiet streets of wooden houses toward the sea, through Kalamaja Park, and on to the Seaplane Harbour or the old Patarei fortress. The district has some of the city’s best neighbourhood cafés and bakeries.

When to go: afternoons and evenings are liveliest; weekends bring markets and crowds. Many venues have their own hours and some close on Mondays, so check before you head out for a specific restaurant.
