Craigdarroch Castle

A coal baron's Victorian mansion on the hill

Craigdarroch Castle is Victoria's most atmospheric historic house, a grand sandstone mansion with turrets and steep roofs set on a hill in the Rockland neighbourhood, about two kilometres east of downtown. It was built in the late nineteenth century for Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish-born coal baron who became one of the richest men in British Columbia, and it was meant to show off that fortune; Dunsmuir famously did not live to see it finished. Today it is a National Historic Site and a house museum run by a non-profit society, restored to show how a wealthy family lived in the 1890s. A self-guided visit takes you up through several floors of rooms decorated in period style, with rich carved wood panelling, ornate fireplaces and a remarkable collection of stained and leaded glass windows that glow on bright days, all connected by a grand oak staircase. Exhibits tell the story of the Dunsmuir family and of the later lives of the house, which served as a military hospital, a college, a school board office and a music conservatory before it became a museum. At the top, the tower room gives a view over the city towards the Olympic Mountains.

Hours and tickets: the castle is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4:30pm, and the ticket office closes 45 minutes before closing time. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Admission is a modest price in Canadian dollars, with reductions for seniors, students, youth and children, and children three and under enter free; some discounts are available only for in-person sales. Self-guided tickets can be bought online or at the visitor centre, and a personalized guided tour can be arranged for an extra fee.

Accessibility and what to bring: the castle is a historic house with many stairs and no ramps or elevators, so it is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors are asked to leave coats, backpacks and strollers in their vehicles, so travel light. Certified guide and service dogs are welcome. Allow at least 45 minutes, and longer if you read the exhibits.

Getting there: the castle is on Joan Crescent, just off Fort Street, about a two-kilometre walk from downtown with a steady incline at the end; Fort Street is on a bus route and has bike lanes. Free parking is available in the castle's own lot. Combine it with a walk through the Rockland neighbourhood's grand old homes, or with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria nearby.
