Europos Parkas is an open-air museum of contemporary art founded in 1991 by the Lithuanian sculptor Gintaras Karosas, about seventeen kilometres from Vilnius. It spreads across around fifty-five hectares of woodland, meadows and rolling hills near the spot that geographers named the geographical centre of Europe, an idea the park celebrates. More than ninety works by artists from around the world are placed along its trails, from monumental steel and stone pieces in clearings to playful installations in the trees, and the setting is as much a part of the experience as the art. It makes a refreshing contrast to the Baroque churches of the Old Town and works especially well on a fine day in spring, summer or autumn.
How it works: the Tiqets entry ticket covers access to the park, with an optional audio guide in English, Lithuanian or Russian; live guided tours are extra. A combination ticket adds the Liubavas Manor-Museum nearby, which opens only at weekends.
Getting there: the park is in the countryside north of the city, so the easiest way is by car or taxi, which takes around half an hour. Public transport is limited, so check routes and return times before you set off.
What to expect: the trails are unpaved in places and can be muddy after rain, so wear walking shoes and bring insect repellent in summer. Allow two to three hours to see the main works at a relaxed pace. There is a café at the entrance area. The park is open daily, with shorter hours on some days, so check the current schedule when you book.
