Trakai Island Castle is the postcard image of Lithuania: a red-brick fortress with towers and a central keep, rising from an island in Lake Galvė among forests and other lakes west of Vilnius. Built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as a seat of the Grand Dukes, it was later abandoned and ruined, then largely reconstructed in the twentieth century. Today it houses the Trakai History Museum, with displays on the castle and the Grand Duchy in its halls and courtyards. The town of Trakai is also home to the Karaim community, whose wooden houses with three windows to the street line the main road and whose pastries, kibinai, are a local speciality. The Tiqets product is a guided tour from Vilnius with castle admission, which takes care of transport and tickets.
How it works: the Tiqets venue sells a guided tour to Trakai Island from Vilnius with castle admission, lasting about four hours, with a live guide in English or Russian, an audio guide and groups of up to twenty. If you prefer to go independently, trains and buses link Vilnius and Trakai, and you buy castle tickets on site.
When to go: the museum is open daily from May to September, Tuesday to Sunday in October, November, March and April, and Wednesday to Sunday from December to February. Summer brings the most visitors and boats on the lake; winter can be magical with snow and frozen water, but it is cold on the bridges. Ticket prices are a little lower from October to March.
Making the most of it: walk around the castle walls and along the lake shore, then try kibinai in a Karaim restaurant on the main street. Tiqets also sells Trakai together with the cathedral crypts or the Bell Tower, a neat way to bundle a Vilnius day with the trip.
