Where to Stay in Acapulco

A neighbourhood guide to the old town, the Costera and Zona Dorada, El Guitarrón and Diamante, matched to five hotels that are open now.

Acapulco is a long bay, and where you sleep decides how you spend your days. The old town and La Quebrada are close to the history and the divers, the Costera and Zona Dorada sit in the middle with the beachfront hotels and the restaurants, and the southern districts of El Guitarrón and Diamante are quieter, resort-style areas. Hurricanes Otis and John damaged many hotels, so the hotels below were checked against recent guest reviews and current rate pages, and each showed rates or guest reviews from late 2026. Check current travel advisories before you book, and confirm room details directly with the hotel.

Old Acapulco and La Quebrada

Choose this side if you want the cliff divers, the Fuerte de San Diego and the Zócalo within a short ride. El Mirador Acapulco is built into the hillside beside La Quebrada, with three pools, two restaurants and free parking. It is a historic, simpler hotel rated as a three-class property, and recent guests mention that it needs some renovation, so it suits travellers who value the setting and the price over modern finishes. Expect hills, steps and slopes around the old town.

Costera Miguel Alemán and Zona Dorada

This is the middle of the bay, with beachfront hotels, restaurants and the busiest stretch of the Costera, which has been resurfaced with new bus shelters and crossings. Fiesta Americana Acapulco Villas offers redesigned villas with kitchens, two pools, a spa and a beach club, and it is a European Plan hotel, so meals are paid separately. Amares Acapulco, formerly the Calinda Beach, has a pool, beach access and some all-inclusive rates. Both are a short taxi ride from the Zócalo and the Fuerte de San Diego, which makes this the best all-round base for a first visit.

El Guitarrón and El Secreto

The Guitarrón side of the bay is quieter and more residential. Park Royal Beach Acapulco sits on El Secreto beach in a gated community, with an all-inclusive plan, a water park and a kids club. It suits families who want food and activities included and who plan to leave the resort for a few excursions, such as the Chapel of Peace in Las Brisas or the city tour. Recent reviews mention some wear in places, so ask which towers and pools are operating.

Diamante

The southern resort area has the largest hotels and the most space. Princess Mundo Imperial is a beachfront resort of more than a thousand rooms and suites, with several pools, a spa and an adjacent golf course, and it is the splurge in this guide. It is a resort-first choice, so plan on taxis or tours for the old town and La Quebrada, and ask the front desk which pools and elevators are in service.

Which should you choose?

For a first visit with sightseeing, pick Fiesta Americana Villas or Amares on the Costera. For atmosphere and the divers on your doorstep, pick El Mirador. For an all-inclusive family stay, pick Park Royal Beach, and for a large resort with golf and a spa, pick Princess Mundo Imperial. Book early for December and Easter weeks, and keep your plans flexible during hurricane season, which runs through November.

Mentioned in this guide

La Quebrada Cliff DiversDo

La Quebrada Cliff Divers

Acapulco's signature show: professional divers leap about 35 metres from the rocks of La Quebrada into a narrow, surging inlet. A sunset visit with a drink and a seat above the cliffs is the best-known evening out in the old town.

Fuerte de San Diego

A star-shaped Spanish fort above the harbour, now the Museo Histórico de Acapulco. Its galleries tell the story of the Manila Galleon trade, pirates and independence, and its walls give a good view of the bay.

Do

Zócalo and Malecón

The shaded heart of old Acapulco, with Plaza Álvarez, the cathedral and a rehabilitated waterfront promenade. It is a free place to stroll, eat and catch the water taxi along the bay.

Acapulco City Tour with Cliff DiversDo
