Where you sleep on the Algarve decides how much of your trip is spent on a beach, on a boat or on the road. The coast is long, and the three main bases suit three different trips. Here is how to choose.
Lagos: cliffs, grottoes and the west
Lagos is the best base for Ponta da Piedade and its sea grottoes, for the beaches of Dona Ana and Camilo and for Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, about forty minutes by road. It has a historic old town, a marina and a lively evening scene, and it is the western end of the regional rail line. Our pick here is Cascade Wellness Resort Lagos, a spa and family resort in the Torralta area with three outdoor pools, a kids club and sea-view suites, about a fifteen-minute walk from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse. It is a short taxi ride from the old town, so choose it for a resort stay rather than for evenings in the old streets. Breakfast is charged separately.
Albufeira: beaches and family days out
Albufeira is the central Algarve, with big beaches, the marina where dolphin cruises depart, and Zoomarine at Guia nearby. It is also the best placed for Benagil, Praia da Marinha and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail to the west. The resorts here sit a drive from the old town, so decide whether you want a self-contained stay. EPIC SANA Algarve at Praia da Falésia is the splurge: a five-star beachfront resort with five restaurants, a wellness centre, a kids club and a suspension bridge to the beach, but it is well east of Albufeira old town, near Vilamoura, so you will want a car or taxis. Vila Galé Collection Praia at Praia da Galé is the mid-range option, a four-star hotel near a golf course and the beach; some listings describe it as adults-only, so check the policy before you book with children.
Faro: the airport, the old town and the lagoon
Faro is the easiest base for arrival and departure days, for the Ria Formosa boat trips and for the walled old town, and it is the most affordable of the three. It is also the quietest in winter, when the cliffs of the west are further away and the weather can be unsettled. AP Eva Senses is the mid-range choice, a four-star hotel on the marina with a free breakfast buffet, an indoor pool and spa, two minutes from the water, four from the station and seven from the old town. Made Inn Faro is the budget choice, a simple hotel three minutes from the station with soundproofed rooms and family rooms for up to five.
Choosing quickly
If boats, cliffs and sunsets are your priority, pick Lagos. If you want beaches, family attractions and a hotel with everything on site, pick Albufeira. If you want the airport, culture and a calm lagoon, or you are travelling on a tight budget, pick Faro. You can also split the trip, spending three nights in Lagos and three in Faro, which saves backtracking on the day you fly.
Practical notes
Peak prices apply in July and August, and many resorts have minimum stays then. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of weather and value. Parking is free at several resorts but not in Faro, where the marina area is easier on foot. And wherever you stay, book your boat trips before your hotel dates are fixed: a flexible plan is what makes the sea-dependent days work.
