Where to Stay in Auckland

How to choose your base in Auckland, from a harbourfront splurge in Wynyard Quarter and an Art Deco boutique hotel by Britomart to a polished hotel beside the Sky Tower, family apartments and a budget pick in the CBD.

Auckland sprawls across a wide isthmus, but for a first visit the choice is simple: stay in or right beside the city centre. That puts the ferries, the waterfront, the Sky Tower and most restaurants within walking distance, and it saves you long bus rides and parking costs. Within the centre, each area has its own character. Here are the ones that work best, and the hotel we would pick in each.

Wynyard Quarter: for a waterfront splurge

West of the Viaduct Harbour, Wynyard Quarter is the city’s newest waterfront district, with Silo Park, the fishing boats of the Lighter Basin and a strip of restaurants along North Wharf. Our featured pick is Park Hyatt Auckland, a five-star hotel of 195 rooms and suites, most with harbour views, a 25-metre infinity pool, a day spa and four restaurants and bars. It is ideal for couples and special trips. The trade-off is a fifteen to twenty-minute waterfront walk to the ferry terminal, and parking is valet only.

Britomart and lower Queen Street: for ferries and character

The blocks around Britomart station are the best base for island days, with the Downtown Ferry Terminal a few minutes away and some of the city’s best bars and restaurants in the restored Britomart precinct. Fable Auckland, MGallery fills the 1928 Art Deco Windsor House with 79 jewel-toned rooms, The Windsor Room restaurant and bar, a jacuzzi and a sauna. It suits couples and first-timers who want a sense of place. Rooms in the lower categories are compact, and parking is very limited.

Quay Park: for families and longer stays

On the eastern edge of the centre, beside Spark Arena, the Adina Apartment Hotel Auckland Britomart offers studios and one- to three-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and, in the larger apartments, a washer and dryer. It is the best choice for families and groups, and on-site parking is available for a fee. Ask for a room away from the arena if a concert is on.

SkyCity and Federal Street: for convenience

The heart of the CBD around the Sky Tower is the most convenient place for rainy-day sightseeing, with the Sky Tower, the All Blacks Experience and Wētā Workshop Unleashed in one block. The Grand by SkyCity connects directly to the precinct and offers 312 rooms and suites, a heated lap pool and the East Day Spa. It works well for families and first-timers who like everything close.

The western CBD: for a budget base

A few blocks from SkyCity, ibis budget Auckland Central on Wyndham Street offers 143 compact private rooms with en-suite showers, a microwave and a fridge, five minutes on foot from the Sky Tower. There is no on-site parking and check-out is early, but the price leaves more for ferries and tours.

Matching base to trip

For romance and views, book Park Hyatt. For character and easy ferries, Fable Auckland. For families or a long stay, the Adina. For rainy-day convenience, The Grand by SkyCity. For the lowest cost, ibis budget.

Practical tips

Breakfast is charged separately at most of these hotels, so compare room-only and breakfast rates. Prices rise sharply over summer, school holidays and major events, so book early for December to February. If you are driving on to Hobbiton or further south, a hotel with parking saves you the cost of a public car park.
