Dzibanché and Kinichná

Quiet Maya cities in the forest south of Bacalar

Dzibanché is a Classic-period Maya city whose rulers belonged to the Kaanu'l dynasty, which governed from here from about the fifth century before power moved to Calakmul. Kinichná is one of four monumental complexes at the site, alongside the Main Group, Lamay Group and Tutil. Dzibanché reopened in early 2025 after a restoration project that put three stucco facades found in October 2024 on view and improved the trails between the complexes. The Cormoranes Pyramid is the largest at the site and was the funerary temple of King Sky Witness, who ruled from 561 to 572. The tourism board lists Dzibanché among Maya sites within about an hour of Bacalar, which makes it a good half-day or day trip.

The experience

The site is set in forest, with large complexes joined by shaded paths, so you walk between them and usually have space to yourself. Dzibanché and Kinichná are usually visited together because they are close,. The carved and stucco details are the highlight, and the quiet makes it a good contrast to the lagoon.

Status and costs

A December 2025 report said the sites were open to the public and that access fees would stay at current levels through 2026, with the local ejido managing visitor access. Because the sources do not agree on exact amounts, check the fee at the gate and carry cash. Opening hours are not confirmed in the sources used here, so check locally. Reports describe the fees as modest.

Planning

You need a car, taxi or guided tour, since public transport is limited. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and insect repellent, and bring water, as there are few facilities. Combine the site with Ichkabal if you have a driver, and aim for a morning visit. For a stay focused on the lagoon, one ruins day is usually enough, and Ichkabal with Los Rápidos is the easier option with hotel pickup.
