There is no more Belgrade address than Hotel Moskva. The ornate building, with its green-tiled facade, domed corner tower and lavish ceramic decoration, has stood at the top of Terazije since it was inaugurated by King Petar I in 1908, and it has been the city’s meeting place ever since. Its guest book reads like a history of the twentieth century: Albert Einstein, Maxim Gorky, Indira Gandhi, Ray Charles, Kirk Douglas, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt among many others. The ground-floor cafe and pastry shop is an institution, serving the Moskva šnit, a layered cake of almonds, pineapple and sour cherries, to locals and visitors all day. Upstairs, the rooms combine period character with modern comforts. Expedia lists it as a four-star property with a wonderful guest rating of 9.2 from more than a thousand reviews, our pick for history and location in the mid-to-upper range.
Location and getting around: the hotel is at Balkanska 1, on the corner of Terazije, the broad square that links Republic Square to Slavija. Knez Mihailova begins a few minutes’ walk away, Kalemegdan is about fifteen minutes on foot, and Skadarlija and the National Assembly are close by. Buses and trolleybuses run along Terazije, and taxis are easy to find. The Tesla Museum and the Temple of Saint Sava are a short taxi ride or a 25-minute walk south.
Rooms: room types range from standard doubles to suites, many with high ceilings and views over Terazije or the rooftops towards the Sava. Rooms on the busy square side are livelier; ask for the courtyard side for quiet.
Who it suits: first-time visitors who want to be at the centre of everything, history lovers and anyone who wants a classic grand hotel without the price of the top luxury addresses.
Good to know: the hotel’s EVA Spa and Wellness is temporarily closed, so do not count on spa facilities for now. Check whether breakfast is in your rate, and leave time for coffee and cake in the cafe downstairs even if you stay elsewhere.
