Danube Catamaran Day Trip from Vienna

Bus there, river back, Bratislava in between

For many travellers Bratislava starts in Vienna, and the most enjoyable way to combine the two capitals is by river. This full-day trip, run by Vienna Sightseeing Tours, leaves by bus from the Vienna State Opera in the morning and reaches Bratislava in about an hour. A live guide, in English or German, leads a walking tour of the old town, with an audio guide in many languages as back-up, and the rest of the day is yours for lunch, the castle or a coffee on Main Square. An optional upgrade adds an hour-long vintage-car ride up to the castle. In the late afternoon you board the Twin City Liner, the fast catamaran that has linked the two cities for twenty years, at the pontoon on the Razus embankment. It glides back past the Danube floodplain forests and arrives at Schwedenplatz in central Vienna. The whole trip takes about nine and a half hours, and lunch is not included.

When it runs: the Twin City Liner is seasonal. The 2026 high season ended on 2 November, but Advent sailings to Bratislava’s Christmas market run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 27 November to 20 December, and weekend winter sailings return in February before the main season restarts in spring. Tiqets showed dates from late November at build.

What to expect: meet at the State Opera fifteen minutes before departure. The catamaran is fast and comfortable, and the ride takes about an hour and a quarter. Free cancellation is available until 72 hours before.

Making the most of it: use your free time for Bratislava Castle or a long lunch, and take a seat on the right-hand side going upstream for the best views of Devín and the floodplain forests.
