Where to Stay in Bratislava

How to choose your base in Bratislava, from a riverside five-star spa hotel to a historic grand hotel on Hviezdoslav Square, a boutique stay by the Danube, a stylish mid-range pick and a budget base below the castle.

Bratislava is compact, so almost every central hotel puts the old town within fifteen minutes on foot. The real choices are atmosphere, budget and whether you value river views, a square-side address or an easy walk to the station. Here are the areas that work best, and the hotel we would pick in each.

The Old Town: for atmosphere

Staying in the car-free centre means stepping straight out to Main Square, the cathedral and the wine bars, and walking home through lit lanes after dinner. It is the obvious choice for first-timers and couples. The Radisson Blu Carlton Hotel, a restored grand hotel filling one side of Hviezdoslav Square, is our classic pick, with square-view rooms, family rooms and the Mirror Bar, one of the World’s 50 Best Bars. In December the Christmas market is right outside the door.

Between the old town and the Danube: for a boutique stay

The quiet streets south of the old town, toward the river, mix embassies, galleries and handsome old buildings. Marrol’s Boutique Hotel, a five-star with 54 rooms in a restored heritage building, is our pick for couples who want a personal hotel with a spa, an excellent restaurant and breakfast included, a few minutes from both the Danube and Michael’s Gate.

The riverside: for the splurge

The modern River Park development on Dvořák Embankment lines the Danube promenade below the castle, about fifteen minutes’ walk from Main Square. The Grand Hotel River Park, a Luxury Collection hotel, is the city’s top address, with spacious rooms looking over the river, a 1,500-square-metre spa and pool on the eleventh floor and an award-winning restaurant. It is the hotel for a special occasion or a spa-centred weekend.

Near the Presidential Palace: for value and rail links

North of the old town, between Michael’s Gate and the main railway station, the streets around the Presidential Palace gardens offer better value and an easy walk to trains for Vienna. The LOFT Hotel Bratislava is our mid-range favourite, with retro-industrial rooms, family rooms, a lively beer pub and outstanding guest reviews.

Below the castle: for budget

On the western edge of the old town, Zámocká street runs along the foot of the castle hill, a few minutes from downtown. The ibis Bratislava Centrum is the dependable budget pick, with simple rooms, a buffet restaurant, a bar and private parking, which is rare this close to the centre.

Matching base to trip

For a romantic weekend, choose Marrol’s or the Grand Hotel River Park. For a first trip with everything on foot, the Radisson Blu Carlton is hard to beat. For families and rail travellers, the LOFT Hotel offers space and value. For a short, budget stay or a trip by car, the ibis keeps costs down.

Practical tips

Rates rise during the December markets and on summer weekends, so book early for those periods. The old town is pedestrianised, so ask your hotel about drop-off and parking before you arrive. Check whether breakfast is included, since several hotels charge it separately, and if you visit in winter, a hotel with a spa or sauna makes cold evenings far more pleasant.
