Crystalbrook Riley

A 311-room five-star resort on the Cairns Esplanade, two minutes from the waterfront, with a pool and cabanas, a spa, a 24-hour gym and ocean views from the Asian restaurant. The most stylish central base for reef departures and city dining.

★★★★★

Crystalbrook Riley is the leading luxury hotel in central Cairns, on the Esplanade at the edge of the Trinity Inlet waterfront. It has 311 rooms, from Urban rooms facing the city to Sea rooms and suites, with large rooms of around 300 to 340 square feet and family rooms of about 690. The design is polished and contemporary, with a resort-style pool, cabanas and a poolside bar at the heart of a garden. There is a spa with massage and body treatments, a 24-hour gym, two bars and Paper Crane, an Asian restaurant with ocean views. Bike hire and an EV charging station are available. It is a hotel for travellers who want comfort and a short walk to the Esplanade lagoon, the Night Markets and the Reef Fleet Terminal.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at 131 to 141 Esplanade, two minutes' walk from the waterfront promenade. The Esplanade Lagoon and the Night Markets are about eight minutes on foot, the Cairns Central shopping centre and Marlin Marina about eleven minutes, and the airport about ten minutes by car. This makes it very easy to join reef cruises from the marina, Skyrail and train departures, or a day tour that collects from the hotel. You can do most of Cairns without a car.

The rooms: choose between Urban rooms, which face the city, and Resort or Sea rooms, which have views of the pool or ocean. Panoramic Sea rooms and the larger suites have the best outlooks, while family rooms sleep up to six. All have premium bedding, air conditioning, kettles and large televisions. Rooms are generous and quiet, and higher floors have the best views of the water.

Good to know: breakfast is charged separately, and self-parking carries a daily fee, so factor those in. The pool is open from early morning to evening, the spa books out at weekends, and pets are not allowed other than service animals. The hotel suits couples, families and business travellers, and its restaurant is a good option after a long reef day. In stinger season, from roughly November to May, the pool and the free Esplanade lagoon are the safe places to swim. Book early for peak dry-season weeks.
