Hotel Grano de Oro

Hotel Grano de Oro

A tropical Victorian mansion in western San José turned into the capital’s most celebrated boutique hotel, with a garden courtyard, rooftop hot tubs and an award-winning French-Mediterranean restaurant.

★★★★★

Hotel Grano de Oro, named for the golden coffee bean, is the boutique hotel that travellers and tour planners have recommended in San José for decades. It occupies a restored tropical Victorian mansion around a hundred years old on Calle 30, between Avenidas 2 and 4, in the leafy residential streets off Paseo Colón at the western edge of downtown. Inside, polished wood, tiled floors, potted palms and quiet courtyards create a calm world away from the traffic, and the rooftop garden terrace has lawn beds and two hot tubs with views over the city. The restaurant is the hotel’s pride: led by French chef Francis Canal, it blends French-Mediterranean cooking with Costa Rican ingredients and has collected Wine Spectator awards year after year, backed by a cellar of around 1,800 bottles. Breakfast in the courtyard, with gallo pinto, fresh tortillas and plantains as well as international dishes, is a highlight. The hotel holds a top sustainability rating from the Costa Rica Tourism Board.

Location and getting around: the hotel is about an eight-minute walk from La Sabana Park, the city’s great green space, and a short taxi ride from the National Theatre, the Gold Museum and the Central Market, which is around a twenty-minute walk. It is well placed for the airport and for the roads west toward Arenal and the Pacific, and free self-parking makes it easy for drivers. An airport transfer can be arranged around the clock for a fee.

The rooms: there are several categories, from cosy standard rooms to suites, all air-conditioned with minibars and classic furnishings. Garden-view rooms are the quietest; some guests receive a welcome fruit plate on arrival.

Who it suits: couples, food lovers and anyone who wants a calm, characterful first or last night in Costa Rica before or after the volcano. It is less suited to travellers who want to walk out into a lively nightlife district.

Good to know: breakfast is à la carte and charged separately on many rates. Book the restaurant for dinner even if you are not staying, since it is one of the city’s best. There is a small fitness room, a library and spa treatment rooms.
