Katara Cultural Village

Doha’s seaside arts quarter

Katara Cultural Village is Doha’s purpose-built arts quarter, set between the West Bay towers and The Pearl with a beach on one side and the Katara Hills on the other. It is free to wander, and it packs a lot into a small area. The amphitheatre, a Greek-style open-air theatre for up to 5,000 people, looks out to sea. The Katara Mosque, designed by Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu, is covered in blue and gold tilework, while the smaller Gold Mosque, faced in gold tiles, glows opposite the amphitheatre. Beside the main mosque stand the pigeon towers, tall structures pierced with perches, a favourite photo stop. Galleries such as the Katara Art Center host changing exhibitions, the Al Thuraya Planetarium runs dome shows, and 21 High Street is an air-conditioned luxury shopping street. Restaurants serve seafood, Lebanese, Egyptian and Indian food, and the public beach rents out watersports.

How it works: entry to the village is free, and the grounds are open into the evening. Exhibitions, the planetarium and events have their own schedules, so check what is on before you go.

What to expect: the village is spread out, with some long walks between sights, so the cooler hours are best. Dress modestly, especially around the mosques, and note that the beach has its own rules and charges.

Making the most of it: arrive in the late afternoon, see the mosques and pigeon towers, climb the Katara Hills for the view, then watch the sunset from the amphitheatre. Finish with dinner on the seafront. The Pearl is a short ride north.
