National Museum of Qatar

Qatar’s story inside a desert rose

The National Museum of Qatar is the building everyone photographs, and it lives up to the hype inside. Jean Nouvel designed it as a cluster of interlocking discs inspired by the desert rose, a crystal formation found in the Gulf’s salt flats, and it curves around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, the original home of the national museum. The galleries take you on a long, immersive journey through Qatar’s story, from the formation of the peninsula and its wildlife to Bedouin life in the desert, the pearl-diving economy of the coast and the transformation brought by oil and gas. Large-scale films projected across the curved walls, archive photographs and personal stories make it more vivid than a conventional history museum, and the restored palace is part of the route. It sits at the southern end of the Corniche, a short ride from the souq.

How it works: the Tiqets ticket gives entry to the permanent and temporary exhibitions, with a downloadable audio guide in several languages. The museum is open from 9am to 7pm, until 9pm on Thursday and from 1:30pm on Friday, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. It is closed on Tuesday.

What to expect: the route is long and slow, with big screens, soundscapes and dimmed galleries, so give it at least two hours. The building is wheelchair accessible, and the café and shop are worth a stop.

Making the most of it: visit it before the Museum of Islamic Art to get the story of Qatar first, then the art. Walk around the outside for the best views of the discs, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.
