The Museum of Islamic Art is the building that put Doha on the cultural map. Designed by I. M. Pei, it rises in pale stone cubes from a man-made island at the southern end of the Corniche, and its geometry, inspired by early Islamic architecture, is as much a reason to come as the collection. Inside, a soaring atrium with a vast window frames the bay and the West Bay towers. The galleries span more than a thousand years and three continents: manuscripts and calligraphy, ceramics, metalwork, glass, textiles, jewellery and scientific instruments, displayed with real care and plenty of space. The museum reopened after a major redisplay in 2022, and the galleries now tell their story more clearly. Around it, MIA Park is open around the clock, with lawns, a waterfront path and views of the skyline.
How it works: the Tiqets ticket includes entry and an audio guide. The museum is open from 9am to 7pm on most days, until 9pm on Thursday and from 1:30pm on Friday, and it is closed on Wednesday. It is also closed to the public on Saturday 7 November 2026.
What to expect: the permanent galleries are arranged over several floors around the atrium, and two to three hours is a comfortable visit. Dress modestly, as you would for any public building in Qatar, and leave time for the café and the shop. The building is cool and calm, so it is a perfect midday escape from the heat.
Making the most of it: come in the late afternoon, then walk out into MIA Park for sunset over West Bay. Parking is limited and fills at weekends, so a taxi or the metro is easier. Pair it with Souq Waqif, a short ride away, for dinner.
