The Burj Khalifa is the reason many people come to Dubai, and going up is the one ticket almost every first-timer should buy. Opened in 2010 and rising 828 meters from the edge of Downtown, it has held the title of the world's tallest building ever since, and its observation decks turn that fact into an experience. There are three tiers. The classic At the Top ticket takes you to Levels 124 and 125, about 456 meters up, with an indoor gallery wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass and an outdoor terrace on 124 where you can feel the desert wind; this is the one most visitors book and it is enough for a superb view. At the Top SKY adds Level 148, around 555 meters, with a short hosted visit, Arabic coffee and dates, a smaller crowd and an outdoor terrace, before you continue down to 124 and 125; the higher deck is worth it if you hate queues or want the photograph without other heads in it. At the very top of the visitor experience is the lounge on Levels 152 to 154, around 585 meters, with drinks, canapés and an outdoor terrace tour, priced as the special-occasion option. From any level the view does the same thing: the Dubai Mall and the fountain lake directly below, the tower clusters of Business Bay and Sheikh Zayed Road running toward the Marina, the Gulf on one side and the desert on the other, with the Palm visible on a clear day. Tickets are timed and priced by demand. Sunset slots cost the most and sell out first, so book them days ahead; early morning and late evening are cheaper and often clearer. Allow about an hour and a half.
A little context helps you read the view. The tower was designed by the architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with a Y-shaped plan inspired by a desert flower that steps back in a spiral as it rises, which is why the terraces seem to float out over the city. It was renamed at its opening in honor of the UAE president of the time, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, and it anchors the Downtown district that Emaar built around it: the Dubai Mall, the fountain lake, the Dubai Opera and Souk Al Bahar. The entrance for the observation decks is inside the Dubai Mall on the lower ground floor, and the walk from the mall to the lifts takes you through an exhibition on the construction before a lift that climbs more than a hundred floors in about a minute.
Timing is everything. On a sunset ticket you watch the light go gold over the desert, then the city lights come up below you; the official advice is to book about two hours before sunset for the full sequence. Haze is common in summer and on dusty days, when mornings are usually sharper, and winter afternoons are the clearest of the year. Arrive ten to fifteen minutes before your slot, leave large bags in the luggage room, and remember there are no refunds for bad weather; terraces can close in strong winds. Prime-time tickets cost noticeably more than off-peak ones, so if the view matters more than the sunset, the first slot of the morning is the value play.
Make an evening of it. Come down in time for the Dubai Fountain, which runs every half-hour after dark on the lake at the foot of the tower; the boardwalk and the terraces of Souk Al Bahar have the best angles. The Dubai Aquarium and the mall are on the way out, and Old Town Island and the Opera district are a short walk across the lake. For families, the SKY tier is often the calmer option, with shorter waits and staff on hand; for couples, a sunset slot followed by dinner with a fountain view is the classic Dubai night out. Whatever you choose, book the tower first, then build the rest of your Downtown day around it.

Good Questions
Which Burj Khalifa ticket should we buy?
Levels 124 and 125 are enough for most visitors and include an outdoor terrace. Add Level 148 if you want fewer people, a hosted welcome and the higher view; the lounge on 152 to 154 is a special-occasion splurge.
When is the best time to go up?
Sunset is the most popular and the most expensive slot, so book days ahead. Early mornings are cheaper and often clearer, and winter is the best season for visibility.
Where is the entrance?
Inside the Dubai Mall on the lower ground floor, signposted At the Top. The nearest metro stop is Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall on the Red Line, linked to the mall by a long air-conditioned walkway.
What happens if it is hazy or windy?
There are no refunds for weather, and the outdoor terraces can close in strong winds. If the forecast shows dust, move to a morning slot if your ticket allows it.
Can we see the fountain from the top?
Yes, the lake is directly below, but the show is better from ground level. Most people go up at sunset and come down for one of the half-hourly shows after dark.
Pairs Well With
Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain
The free show that stops Downtown every half-hour after dark: jets of water choreographed to music on the lake below the Burj Khalifa, with the mall, Souk Al Bahar and the boardwalk as your grandstand. Come hungry and stay for two shows.
Dubai Frame
A golden picture frame 150 meters tall in Zabeel Park, with old Dubai on one side and the new skyline on the other, a glass-floored sky bridge across the top and a gallery that imagines the city's future. Good value and great photos.
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo
A wall of ocean inside the Dubai Mall: sharks and rays gliding past a giant acrylic panel, a walk-through tunnel beneath them, and an Underwater Zoo upstairs with penguins and otters. The easiest family win in Downtown.
