The Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain are two halves of the same evening, and together they are the best free entertainment in the city. The mall is one of the largest shopping centres on earth, with more than a thousand stores, an ice rink, a huge aquarium, a cinema, a fashion avenue of luxury houses and a food court for every budget, all air-conditioned and linked to the Burj Khalifa. You do not have to love shopping to enjoy it; walking through is part of any Downtown day, and it is the easiest place in Dubai to escape the midday heat. Outside, on the man-made Burj Lake, the Dubai Fountain is the main event. Water jets shoot as high as a tall building, swaying and exploding in time with music that ranges from Arabic classics to Andrea Bocelli and film scores, lit from below as the tower glows above. After dark the shows run every thirty minutes until late evening, with a pair of early-afternoon performances as well, and each one lasts a few minutes, so it is easy to catch two. The fountain reopened in October 2025 after a five-month renovation that brought new lighting, sound and choreography, and in late 2026 tall silver water sculptures were being installed in the lake, with a small part of the waterfront cordoned off while work continues; the regular shows carry on. Watching is free from the promenade, the bridge to Souk Al Bahar and the restaurant terraces around the lake. For a closer view, a paid boardwalk takes you out over the water, and traditional abra rides on the lake time their trips to the show.

Where to stand is the only real decision. The waterfront promenade in front of the mall gives the classic view with the Burj Khalifa behind the jets, but it fills quickly from about 7pm, especially at weekends. The footbridge to Souk Al Bahar and the terraces on the souk side give a side-on angle with the tower framed above, and the restaurants along both sides of the lake sell their fountain-view tables at a premium; book ahead if you want one. The boardwalk, ticketed through the operator, puts you a few meters from the jets and is the best way to feel the boom and the spray. The early-afternoon shows are lovely but less dramatic in daylight, so save your effort for after sunset.

Inside the mall, plan rather than wander, because it is genuinely huge. The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo fills a wall of the ground floor, and you can see its main tank free from the mall corridor; the Burj Khalifa entrance is on the lower ground floor; the ice rink, the gold souk and the waterfall with its diving figures are worth a detour. The metro station connects through a long air-conditioned walkway, and taxis queue at several entrances, though they back up badly after the evening shows; walking to the next metro stop or waiting half an hour is often faster.

Dubai Mall also hosts the city's biggest seasonal moments. During the Dubai Shopping Festival in the cool season the mall runs promotions, and on New Year's Eve Downtown fills with crowds for the Burj Khalifa fireworks; access is ticketed and controlled on the night, so plan months ahead if that is your goal. For a first evening in Dubai, though, keep it simple: ride up the Burj at sunset, come down for a fountain show, eat on a terrace by the lake, and watch one more show on your way back to the metro.

What to Expect

The experience
A free choreographed water, light and music show on Burj Lake, a few minutes long, repeated every half-hour after dark, beside a vast air-conditioned mall with an aquarium, ice rink and food courts.
Best time
After sunset, when the shows run every thirty minutes until late. Arrive a little early at weekends for promenade space. Daytime shows exist but are less dramatic.
How long
Two or three hours for the mall, dinner and two shows.
Tips
Watch one show from the promenade and one from the Souk Al Bahar bridge. Book fountain-view tables ahead. Avoid the taxi rank straight after a show; take the metro walkway instead.

Good Questions

What time is the Dubai Fountain show?

After dark the show runs every thirty minutes until late evening, and there are a couple of early-afternoon shows as well. Times shift slightly on Fridays and during Ramadan, so check the Dubai Mall page on the day.

Is the fountain show free?

Yes. Watching from the promenade, the bridge and the public terraces costs nothing. The boardwalk over the lake and the abra rides on Burj Lake are paid extras.

Is there construction at the fountain?

In late 2026 new silver water sculptures were being installed in the lake and a small section of the waterfront was cordoned off. The regular shows were continuing as normal.

Where is the best viewing spot?

The promenade in front of the mall for the classic Burj-behind-the-jets view, the Souk Al Bahar bridge for a side angle, or the boardwalk for a close-up. Restaurant terraces need a booking.

How do we get there by metro?

Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall station and follow the air-conditioned walkway into the mall. Allow ten minutes for the walk.
