Where you stay in western Fiji decides how quickly you reach the water, how much you spend on food and how far you are from your day trips. There are three useful bases: Denarau Island, the area around Nadi airport and the beach strip at Wailoaloa near Nadi town. Each suits a different trip.
Denarau Island: resorts and the marina
Denarau is a resort enclave connected to the mainland by a causeway, and it is where Port Denarau Marina sits, the departure point for most Mamanuca and Yasawa cruises. If you plan several boat days, this is the best base. The island has shops, restaurants and a golf course, and most tours pick up here. Prices are higher than elsewhere in Nadi, and meals at resorts add up, so consider a package with breakfast. Three hotels cover the range. The Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa is our splurge pick, a five-star beachfront resort with a huge pool, many restaurants, a spa, an adults-only beach club and a kids club, and note that the Waitui Beach Club pool is being upgraded from 11 January to 24 February 2027. The Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa is a sociable resort with beachfront pools, a kids club and good dining including Fijian dishes at Nuku and Pan Asian at Maravu. The Radisson Blu Resort Fiji Denarau Island is the practical option for families and groups, with big rooms and suites with kitchens and laundry facilities.
Nadi airport area: convenience and value
If you have an early flight, a late arrival or a plan centred on land tours, staying near the airport makes sense. Tokatoka Resort Hotel sits directly opposite Nadi International Airport, with villas, a pool, a restaurant and airport transfers. It is closer to the Sabeto valley than Denarau is, which suits the mud pool, the orchid garden and a village visit, though island cruises require a longer trip to the marina. It is a good first or last night, or a base for a few days of land exploring.
Wailoaloa Beach: budget and atmosphere
Smugglers Cove Beach Resort and Hotel is on Wailoaloa Beach about fifteen minutes from the airport, the town and Port Denarau. It is sociable and good value, with a sunset deck bar and nightly Fijian entertainment, and rooms at a range of budgets. Some day tours include pickups from Wailoaloa hotels, so it works well for travellers who spend most of their time on excursions. The beach itself is a bay with tidal flats rather than a swimming lagoon, so treat it as a sunset spot and go to the islands for swimming.
Choosing by trip style
For a honeymoon or a special occasion, choose the Sofitel or the Hilton. For a family holiday with young children, choose a resort with a kids club such as the Sofitel or the Hilton, or pick the Radisson Blu for space and kitchens. For a short stopover, choose Tokatoka. For a budget trip with lots of tours, choose Smugglers Cove. Many travellers split their stay, for instance a few nights on Denarau followed by a night near the airport before flying home.
Practical tips
Book early for school holidays and the dry season from May to October. Ask about airport transfers and what breakfast includes. If noise matters, request a room away from pools and bars, and at the airport hotel ask for a quiet room. Check the resort policy for children and age limits for clubs and adult-only areas. Finally, remember that you will probably spend most days out on tours, so choose a base that makes your transfers easy rather than paying for features you will not use.
