Three Days on Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island guide

Three Days on Hilton Head

A balanced three-day plan that mixes the beach and bikes with Sea Pines, dolphins, the island's Gullah story and a day across the water on Daufuskie, with options for Bluffton and Beaufort.

Three days is the right amount of time for a first look at Hilton Head: enough for the beach and the bike paths, the famous south end, the island's deeper history and one great day trip. This plan assumes a base on the south or mid island and a bike for at least part of the time. Swap days around to suit the weather and the tides.

Before you arrive

Book the experiences that fill up: a dolphin or sunset cruise from Harbour Town, the Gullah Heritage Trail Tour from the Coastal Discovery Museum, and the Daufuskie ferry with a golf cart reserved for the same day. Arrange bike rentals delivered to your accommodation. Check a tide table for the dates of your trip, because low tide is the time to ride and walk the beach. If you are visiting between November 27 and January 1, add an evening for Harbour Town Lights.

Day one: beach, bikes and Sea Pines

Start with a sunrise or early-morning walk at Coligny Beach Park, then pick up your bikes and ride the beach if the tide is low. After breakfast, cycle or drive to Sea Pines (day visitors driving in pay a per-vehicle gate fee; cyclists pedal in on the pathways). Spend the late morning in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, walking the boardwalk over the old rice fields and looking for alligators, egrets and the ancient shell ring. Head to Harbour Town for lunch on the yacht basin. In the afternoon, join a dolphin cruise through Calibogue Sound, then climb the Harbour Town Lighthouse's 114 steps as the light turns gold. Stay for dinner on the harbor and watch the lighthouse glow.

Day two: the island's story

Begin at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, which is free, to understand the island from its Native American shell rings and Spanish neighbors to the plantation era, the Civil War and the resort age. Then join the Gullah Heritage Trail Tour, which departs from the museum and lasts about two and a half hours, led by guides who grew up on the island before the bridge. After lunch, drive to the north end to walk Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, site of the town of freedpeople founded in 1862, and stroll neighboring Fish Haul Beach on Port Royal Sound. In late afternoon, paddle with a guided kayak tour on Broad Creek or in the calm Palmetto Dunes lagoon, then have a waterfront seafood dinner; Hudson's, on Skull Creek since 1968, is the north-end classic.

Day three: Daufuskie Island

Catch a morning boat to Daufuskie: the Island Head ferry from Broad Creek Marina takes about 45 minutes to Freeport Marina, and water taxis from Harbour Town are faster. Pick up your golf cart and spend the day on the island's sandy roads, visiting the First Union African Baptist Church, the Gullah cemeteries and the restored schoolhouse, browsing the artists' studios, tasting at Silver Dew Winery in its 1883 lighthouse cottage, and walking the quiet public beach. Lunch at Old Daufuskie Crab Company by the marina. Ride the late-afternoon boat back across the sound and spend your last evening at Coligny or the Tiki Hut for live music on the sand.

If you have a fourth day

Choose between Bluffton and Beaufort. For Bluffton, stop first at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, between the bridges, for an early walk to Ibis Pond, then wander Old Town Bluffton's galleries, see the 1854 Church of the Cross on the May River bluff, and buy oysters at the Bluffton Oyster Company if they are in season. For Beaufort, drive about an hour north to walk the historic district, visit Reconstruction Era National Historical Park's visitor center, see the Penn Center on St. Helena Island and, if time allows, climb the Hunting Island Lighthouse, reopened in May 2026.

Where to stay for this plan

A south-end base makes days one and three easiest: Beach House or the Holiday Inn Express at Coligny for walkable beach time and bike access to Sea Pines, or the Inn & Club at Harbour Town for a polished stay with the lighthouse down the lane and the Harbour Town water taxis to Daufuskie close by. Families who want a resort should look at the Sonesta in Shipyard, a short ride from Coligny, or the all-suite Omni in Palmetto Dunes, which is closest to Broad Creek Marina for the Daufuskie ferry and the kayak outfitters around Shelter Cove.

The daily rhythm

Hilton Head rewards an early start and a slow middle. Mornings are cool and calm, the best time for wildlife, kayaking and the beach; middays, especially in summer, are for lunch in the shade, a museum or a pool; and late afternoons bring the golden light that makes the lighthouse climb, a sunset cruise or a marsh-side dinner memorable. Build in one unplanned afternoon, because the island's best moments often come from a bike ride that turns into a beach walk that turns into watching dolphins from the shore.

Adjustments

With young children, swap the Gullah tour for a shrimp-trawling cruise and add extra beach time; Coligny's facilities make it the easiest beach for families. For couples, book the sunset dinner cruise and consider a night at Montage Palmetto Bluff. Golfers can trade an afternoon for a round in Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes. On a rainy day, the Coastal Discovery Museum's galleries and Bluffton's galleries are the best indoor options. In the off-season, check winter schedules for boats, tours and restaurants, but enjoy the empty beaches and mild days.
