Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay

Tasmania's famous beach, as a day from Hobart

Freycinet National Park occupies the Freycinet Peninsula on Tasmania's east coast, and Wineglass Bay is its showpiece, a crescent of pale sand framed by pink granite peaks. Most visitors walk to the Wineglass Bay Lookout, a 2.6 km return walk that Parks and Wildlife rates as Grade 3 and gives 1 to 1.5 hours, with short steep sections, a rough surface and many steps. Continuing down to the beach makes a longer 6 km return walk of about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The park has other short walks, including the 600 metre Cape Tourville circuit, which is Grade 1 and takes about 20 minutes. A valid parks pass is required to enter any Tasmanian national park. From Hobart the drive is long, so many visitors join a guided day tour that covers transport and park entry.

What to do

The standard plan is to walk up to the lookout for the postcard view, then decide whether to go down to the beach, which doubles the effort but gives you the sand and the water. If you have less time or energy, Cape Tourville's easy circuit gives a coastal outlook, and Sleepy Bay is a short Grade 3 walk to a rocky cove.

Keep inside the barriers at cliff edges, and supervise children closely. The fitter can take on Mount Amos or the longer circuit, but those are separate, harder walks and need more time.

Planning

The guided day trips from Hobart run for about 10 and a half hours, with a small-group guided tour and a tour that adds Richmond and a transfer, so check which suits you before you book. Entry to the national park needs a valid parks pass, so confirm whether the tour includes it.

The Wineglass Bay Lookout track is steep and not suitable for people with health issues or restricted mobility, and Parks and Wildlife lists no closures for it. Parks and Wildlife also notes a seasonal campfire ban from late December 2025 across several nearby areas, so check alerts if you plan to camp or picnic.

Fitting it in

This is a long day from Hobart, with several hours of driving, so treat it as a full-day commitment and bring water, sun protection, sturdy shoes and a layer. Many visitors prefer to stay overnight on the east coast, but a day tour works if you are short of time. Pair it with a slower day in Hobart afterwards. The lookout walk is the heart of the trip, so if the weather is poor or you are tired, do the lookout and the Cape Tourville circuit, and skip the beach descent.
