Where to Stay in Innsbruck

How to choose your base in Innsbruck, from a 600-year-old inn by the Golden Roof to a pool hotel on the Inn bridge, a central design hotel with a rooftop bar, a panoramic tower by the station and a stylish budget pick.

Innsbruck is compact, so every hotel in this guide puts the Golden Roof within a fifteen-minute walk. The real choice is between three zones: the medieval old town, the modern city centre around Maria-Theresien-Straße, and the area around the main station, which is less pretty but has the best transport links and, from its taller buildings, the best mountain views. Here are the areas that work best and the hotel we would pick in each.

The old town: for atmosphere

Staying in the Altstadt means stepping out straight into the lanes around the Golden Roof and walking home past lit arcades after dinner. It is the natural choice for first-timers, couples and history lovers. The Hotel Goldener Adler on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße has welcomed travellers for more than six centuries, with rooms that tell the stories of guests such as Goethe and Andreas Hofer, a Tyrolean restaurant and family rooms with connecting doors. At the old town end of the Inn bridge, Hotel Das Innsbruck adds what the medieval lanes lack: a pool open around the clock and a sixth-floor spa facing the Nordkette. The trade-offs are that cars are largely kept out, so you park in a garage, and the Christmas market makes Advent evenings lively.

The city centre: for style and nightlife

Around Maria-Theresien-Straße and Adolf-Pichler-Platz you are among the shops, cafés and bars of modern Innsbruck, still only a few minutes from the old town. The Penz Hotel is our pick here, a glass-fronted design hotel whose 5th Floor rooftop bar is one of the most popular in the city. It suits couples and friends who want a lively base and contemporary rooms.

Near the main station: for views and value

The station area is the practical choice for rail travellers and anyone planning day trips, as the Swarovski shuttle and trains to Hall leave from here. It also has the city’s best hotel views. Our splurge is the aDLERS Hotel, a design hotel in a tower beside the station, with panoramic rooms, a 12th-floor restaurant and rooftop bar and an 11th-floor spa. Our budget pick is Motel One Innsbruck, three minutes from the platforms, with an urban Alpine chalet look, a rooftop terrace facing the Nordkette and compact, well-planned rooms.

Matching base to trip

For a romantic weekend, choose the aDLERS for the views or The Penz for the bar. For history and character, book the Goldener Adler. For families or anyone who wants a swim after sightseeing, Hotel Das Innsbruck makes the most sense. For a short or budget stay built around day trips, Motel One is hard to beat.

Practical tips

Book early for Advent weekends and the New Year ski jumping, when rates climb. Check whether breakfast is included, as several of these hotels charge it separately. If you are driving, ask about parking before you arrive. A local tourist tax is added per person per night, and many hotels give guests a Welcome Card with local perks. Finally, whichever area you choose, ask for a room on a higher floor facing north: waking up to the Nordkette from your window is one of the great pleasures of a stay in Innsbruck.
