Hotel Kansas City, in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt

A 144-room boutique hotel in the restored 1920s Kansas City Club building downtown, with The Town Company restaurant, a music bar, a grand lobby and coffee bar, and The Midland theatre across the street.

★★★★★

Hotel Kansas City is the most characterful upscale stay downtown and our splurge pick. It occupies the landmark Kansas City Club building on Baltimore Avenue, a fifteen-storey 1920s tower that was once the city’s grand private gentlemen’s club, restored and reopened as a hotel in October 2020 as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection of independent-spirited properties. The restoration kept the dark wood, high ceilings and club-like grandeur of the public rooms while giving the 144 guest rooms a modern, comfortable finish. The Town Company, the hotel’s Midwest-inspired restaurant, is one of the most talked-about tables in the city, and the hotel also has its own music bar, a street-level lobby and coffee bar and a large rooftop. Guest reviews are excellent, averaging above nine out of ten on Expedia from more than eight hundred stays. The location is ideal for an evening out: The Midland theatre is practically next door, the Power and Light District and the T-Mobile Center are a few minutes’ walk, and the free streetcar runs a couple of blocks away.

Location and getting around: the hotel stands at 1228 Baltimore Avenue in the heart of downtown, a minute’s walk from The Midland theatre and two minutes from the Kansas City Convention Center and the Power and Light District. The KC Streetcar, which is free, runs along Main Street a short walk away and connects you with Union Station, Crown Center and the River Market without a car. Union Station and the WWI Museum are about ten minutes by car, and the airport is roughly twenty-five minutes.

Rooms: the 144 rooms and suites blend the building’s historic character with contemporary comforts, and all have free Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Higher floors give the best city views and are quieter on busy event nights.

Who it suits: couples on a special weekend, food lovers who want The Town Company on their doorstep, concert-goers heading to The Midland or the T-Mobile Center, and business travellers attending events at the convention center who want more character than a standard chain.

Good to know: breakfast is charged separately unless included in your rate. Parking is valet only, and the daily charge is significant, so consider the streetcar and rideshares rather than bringing a car. Pets are welcome for a one-time fee. There is a 24-hour gym but no pool or spa, so look elsewhere if those matter. Book the restaurant ahead on weekends, as it is popular with locals too.
