★★★★★

The Loews Kansas City Hotel is the city’s newest big hotel and one of its best-reviewed, earning near-perfect guest scores on Expedia from more than two thousand stays. It opened in June 2020 as the convention center hotel, with 800 rooms including 47 suites, and it combines the scale of a convention hotel with a surprisingly polished, local-flavoured feel. The Stilwell serves barbecue, bourbon and reinvented American classics, Bar Stilwell is a lively lobby bar, Red Wheat Baking Co. sells coffee, pastries and sandwiches, and Horsefeather Social, on a seventh-floor terrace, offers cocktails with views across to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. There is an indoor saltwater lap pool on the third floor and a 24-hour fitness center with Peloton bikes. The hotel is connected to the Kansas City Convention Center, and the Kauffman Center, The Midland, the T-Mobile Center and the Crossroads are all within a short walk. It holds a AAA Four Diamond rating, and it is the most practical choice for anyone attending an event or wanting a pool in winter.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at 1515 Wyandotte Street, at the southern edge of downtown. The convention center is a minute away, the Kauffman Center and the T-Mobile Center are about six minutes on foot, The Midland about five and Crown Center around thirteen. Union Station is a walk of a little over fifteen minutes, and the free KC Streetcar runs a few blocks east on Main Street. The airport is about twenty-five minutes by car.

Rooms: the rooms are modern and comfortable, and higher floors facing south give views toward the Kauffman Center and the Crossroads. The 47 suites suit families or longer stays.

Who it suits: convention and business travellers, families who want an indoor pool year-round, performing arts fans going to the Kauffman Center, and anyone who values a big, well-run hotel with plenty of dining on site.

Good to know: breakfast is charged separately unless included in your rate. Self-parking and valet both carry a nightly charge. Pets are welcome for a per-stay fee, with a limit of two per room. Check-in is from 4 pm. During large conventions the lobby can be busy, so book early and ask for a room on a higher floor.
