Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Domes, manuscripts and the art of the Islamic world

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is the quiet masterpiece of Kuala Lumpur’s museum scene and the perfect escape from the midday heat. Its white building, crowned with turquoise domes and lined with Iranian-style tilework, holds one of the largest collections of Islamic decorative art in Southeast Asia. Galleries cover Qur’an manuscripts and calligraphy, architecture and scale models of the great mosques of the world, textiles, jewellery, arms, ceramics and metalwork, with strong sections on China, India and the Malay world. The interior domes themselves are a highlight. The museum sits on Jalan Lembah Perdana, beside the National Mosque and on the edge of the Perdana Botanical Garden, and it is open every day except the two main Hari Raya holidays.

How it works: buy tickets at the customer service counter in the lobby, by cash or card. There is a modest adult fee, reduced prices for students and free entry for children under six. Galleries open from 9:30 to 18:00 daily, with shorter hours during Ramadan.

What to expect: the museum is spacious and rarely crowded, with good English labelling. Allow two hours for the permanent galleries and check what temporary exhibition is on. The museum shop is one of the best in the city for books, textiles and gifts, and there is a restaurant on site for lunch.

Making the most of it: pair it with the National Mosque next door, visiting outside prayer times, and a walk in the Perdana Botanical Garden. The hop-on hop-off bus stops nearby, and Merdeka Square is a short taxi ride or a hot twenty-minute walk away.
